“Because it hardens the heart.”

Note: I have been working on some theological research and did not think to post on this blog again until it was finished, but in the meantime I wrote this out and found that these thoughts pleased me, so I figured that I would share them before the other stuff gets published.

Perversion is the name of the devilish game

An angel showed Nephi a body of Gentile worshipers that would exist in the latter days—which he called a great and abominable church, even the most abominable of all other bodies of worshipers (churches)—who would take away many plain and precious parts, and also many covenants of the Lord, from the gospel of the Lamb. (See 1 Ne. 13:26.) The angel then explained why these people would do this:

And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men. (1 Ne. 13:27)

The right ways of the Lord are that the mind see (not be blind) by always looking at the light of the world, which is Jesus Christ upon the cross, and that the heart be soft and broken (not be hard), by receiving the Holy Ghost. The two-fold process (three, really, when you count praying continually to the Father without fainting) is designed to transform men and women into Christs (Anointed Ones). We look to Jesus as the standard we are seeking to emulate and then we put up no resistance, whatsoever to the influence of the Holy Spirit, so that we become a completely malleable lump of clay in the Lord’s hands, one that can be easily manipulated by Him and made to exactly conform to the standard we are looking to. A broken heart, then, is a heart that has completely submitted itself to the transforming power of the Holy Ghost, putting up no resistance to becoming like Christ.

The word emulate means “to strive to equal or excel (another); to imitate, with a view to equal or outdo; to vie with; to rival; as, to emulate the good and the great.” Jesus taught,

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” (John 14:12)

Thus, the gospel is that we “strive to equal or excel” Christ, doing even greater works than He did, which is one of the reasons why it is called the more excellent way of Christ. In other words, the doctrine of Christ really is a doctrine of emulation. Emulation, or the “ambition or endeavor to equal or excel; rivalry”, gives glory to God because through the atonement of His Son, God does the impossible, taking nothings (us) and making us somethings greater than even “the greatest of all” (D&C 19:18.) This miracle shows forth God’s matchless power and marvelous ways, causing all things to “shut their mouths” in dumbfounderment and give glory to Him. But the impossible can only be made possible through the right ways of the Lord. Otherwise, this transformation into a new creature remains an impossibility.

The word perverse comes from the French perver, which comes from the Latin perversus, which means “turned the wrong way, not right.” Thus, any deviation to the right or to the left from the straight course of the Lord is a perversion. However, the particular body of worshipers of which the angel spoke is considered the most abominable because their perversion consists of a 180 degree change in direction. So, if the Lord says to go right, they seek that men go left, or that they do the exact opposite of what He says and wills. In other words, they seek to change the polarity of the brains of men, from negative to positive and from positive to negative.

Through mass media

The prophesied modus operandi of the Gentile mother of harlots (the great and abominable church) would be the systematic perversion of media, meaning mass media. Mass media is the plural form of mass medium, which is “a medium of communication (as newspapers, radio or television) that is designed to reach the mass of the people.”

This criminal pattern of operation began by taking “a record of the Jews” that was intended and “designed [by God] to reach the mass of the people,” and then editing out many of the more plain and precious parts and covenants originally found therein. Afterward, this now perverted media was sent out to the mass of Gentile nations, causing “an exceedingly great many” of the Gentiles to stumble and become subject to Satan’s power.

But the wicked body of worshipers would not stop there. They would continue their work of destruction and captivity by taking control of every conceivable form of mass media, and doing the same thing they did to that ancient record of the Jews, taking all wholesome media and removing the spiritual value it may have once contained.

Media: wholesome, distraction or poison to the mind

Any form of media, be it a television show, a motion picture, a video game, a novel or other literature, a theatrical performance (a play), a speech, a radio talk show or even a song or music video, must fall into one of three categories in its effect on the mind:

1. things that point our minds to Christ (wholesome),

2. things that point our minds to the things of men (distracting), or

3. things that point our minds directly to the devil (poisonous.)

Mind-healing (wholesome) media

Wholesome media points men to Christ. This category follows the pattern given by Mormon:

But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.

For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. (Moroni 7:13,16)

There are two questions, then, to ask oneself about any media to determine whether it is wholesome: 1) does it invite to do good and 2) does it persuade to believe in Christ? You must be able to answer, “yes,” to both questions for a media program to be wholesome. This category of media may still present sinful behavior to its audience, but it does so in the context of the gospel of Jesus Christ, always speaking of the sinful behavior as sinful and inviting the audience to do good and not evil and to believe in Christ.

A program that presents sinful behavior as wrong and abnormal (perversion) but that fails to invite the audience to do good and fails to persuade men to believe in Christ does not qualify as wholesome. Wholesome media heals the minds of men by pointing them to Christ. Everything else is either a distraction or a poison to man’s mind, the effect of which causes spiritual blindness.

Media strategies of distraction and darkness

Anything that falls into categories two and three, then, is unwholesome. All media that passes through the mother of harlots is either dimmed, darkened or left in the same category it was originally in, depending on how it started out, the readiness and circumstances of the people, and the design of the whore of all the earth. Her ultimate goal is to have only dark media, but she sometimes will settle for dimmed media. Dimmed media is anything that showcases the works of men, while leaving out the works of God and of the devil. This type of media can be useful to transition a population subtly into total darkness, which is the desire of these perverts. Essentially, the abominable church uses dimmed media as a strategy of distraction.

Media that passes through the great and abominable church is never enlightened by her. Thus, this church will never take poisonous material and remove all of its poisonous elements, bringing it into a merely dim state. It may remove some of them, if it thinks the public will not consume it in its present state, but it will never edit dark media to make it dim, nor edit dim material to make it wholesome and enlightened by Christ. Instead, the trend is to take wholesome material and edit it so that it is transformed into either a dimmed distraction or poisonous darkness. Or, it will take material that is already a dimmed distraction and either leave it as it is or add some poison to it. For material that is already poisonous darkness, it will either leave it in its condition, add more poison to it, or remove some (but not all) of its poison, so that the public more easily and readily consumes it.

The great and abominable church, although employing strategies of distraction, are noted for their attempts to get everyone looking 180 degrees in the opposite direction of Christ, so that they view the works of the devil, which are works of darkness. By constantly viewing works of darkness, the human mind becomes conditioned to darkness. Eventually the human mind comes to accept the works of the devil as normal, human conditions, and not as devilish perversions.

A key to determine whether something is a work of man or a work of the devil is whether sinful behavior is present in what is viewed (or listened to.) For example, if you are watching a television show that is about fishing, a common pastime of humans, and there is no sinful behavior presented to the audience, meaning nobody lies, nobody cheats, steals, murders, fornicates, exhibits pride, boasts, etc., on the show, the fishing show can be said to be merely distractive: a showcase of the works of men. But, if the fishing show routinely presents sinful behavior in front of the eyes of the audience, and more especially if the behavior is presented as normal or “not that bad,” the show is a propaganda piece to point the minds of men to the devil, to condition them to his dark works.

Media can either soften or harden the heart

Unlike the mind, there are only two effects media has on the heart. On the one hand there is media that softens the heart. For example, this could be media that cause one to feel sorrow for sin, both for one’s own sins as well as the sins of the world.

And now, my son, I desire that ye should let these things trouble you no more, and only let your sins trouble you, with that trouble which shall bring you down unto repentance.

O my son, I desire that ye should deny the justice of God no more. Do not endeavor to excuse yourself in the least point because of your sins, by denying the justice of God; but do you let the justice of God, and his mercy, and his long-suffering have full sway in your heart; and let it bring you down to the dust in humility. (Alma 42:29-30)

Any media, therefore, that causes you to feel sorrow for sin, individually and generally speaking, has a heart-softening, humbling and heart-breaking effect. Such media is wholesome (heart-healing.) Another example would be media that causes one to rejoice in the marvelous works of the Lord, inspiring one towards emulation of the Son of God. Sometimes media can possess both such effects on the heart of man, such as what king Mosiah read to his people:

And now, when Mosiah had made an end of reading the records, his people who tarried in the land were struck with wonder and amazement. For they knew not what to think; for when they beheld those that had been delivered out of bondage they were filled with exceedingly great joy.

And again, when they thought of their brethren who had been slain by the Lamanites they were filled with sorrow, and even shed many tears of sorrow.

And again, when they thought of the immediate goodness of God, and his power in delivering Alma and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites and of bondage, they did raise their voices and give thanks to God.

And again, when they thought upon the Lamanites, who were their brethren, of their sinful and polluted state, they were filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls. (Mosiah 25:7-11)

On the other hand, every other type of media hardens the heart by degrees, depending upon whether the media has a distractive or poisonous effect on the mind.

Desensitization equals hard-heartedness

Whenever we view media that presents sin to us as normal behavior, meaning without labeling and condemning it as perversion, there is a slight desensitization that occurs in our hearts. If we repeatedly are shown sinful behavior outside of the context of the gospel, which categorically condemns such sins as devilish perversions, the heart can quite quickly become completely desensitized so that it no longer can discern (feel) why such behavior is morally wrong.

Only in the context of the gospel can sinful behavior be viewed with soul-saving benefit, meaning that the viewing of sinful behavior in a gospel context actually causes us to sorrow for sin, which enables us to repent and come to Christ. Outside of this context, sinful behavior, even pretended sinful behavior, such as the acting done in movies and television shows, desensitizes our hearts, making them harder or more resistant to the power of the Holy Ghost and less disposed to sorrow over sin.

Devilish strategies

The great and abominable church uses media to flood the minds and hearts of men with specific images and sounds that cause spiritual blindness and hard hearts, all under the guise of entertainment or education. The strategy used, as far as the heart is concerned, is to continuously present all manner of sinful behavior to the public, in all forms of media, without ever inviting the audience to do good, nor ever persuading them to believe in Christ. This constant stream of perversion completely shuts down the sensitivity of the heart organ.

Once the heart is desensitized and the mind blinded, the man is in a condition ready to be controlled by demonic forces. The devil cannot perform his deeds in light (meaning minds that see, or that aren’t under spiritual blindness) nor with softened hearts. His are methods of control and he cannot take control of enlightened minds and soft, broken hearts. He needs, first, to darken the mind and harden the heart. Once that happens, the mind and heart of man becomes highly suggestible and he can then lead them where he will, down to their destruction.

The nature of man is to resist all control systems, but it only manifests insofar as the mind and heart of man are in their proper polarities. Once the polarities are switched, the opposite effect occurs, namely that man’s (now perverse) nature submits to the devil’s control systems, freely giving up its agency to him so that he can destroy it.

The great and abominable church, that body of perverse worshipers, has a two-fold purpose in seeking to reverse the polarities of the two brain hemispheres in man: first, to cause the man to give up agency to the devil through deceit, darkness, desensitization and ultimately the man’s own sins, and secondly, to create a very thick veil of unbelief so that the man becomes completely desensitized to the wonders and marvels of God.

Why the heart must be sensitive

The Lord made the heart sensitive as a protection to us. A sensitive heart can very easily perceive the evilness that comes from the devil. It has a natural, moral compass that tells the man that the things of the devil are destructive and dark, whereas the things of God are good and marvelous. It is designed to spurn the works of the devil and to thrive on the works of the Father, even to delight in them, which in turn are designed to greatly affect the highly sensitive hearts of men. In this way, both parties are edified, both the man and his God. (See D&C 50.) When the brain polarities are switched, this natural process is highjacked. Now, when God shows forth His marvels, the desensitized heart of man feels nothing and his blind mind thinks nothing of them, “esteem[ing] them as things of naught” (2 Nephi 33:2). He no longer marvels and this, in turn, causes God’s anger to rise, for neither are edified:

And it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety and fifth year also, and the people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their hearts, and blind in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen—imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing. (3 Nephi 2:1-2)

…and thus were the people in a state of many afflictions; and the sword of destruction did hang over them, insomuch that they were about to be smitten down by it, and this because of their iniquity. (3 Nephi 2:19)

What sin and righteousness really are

Sin is anything, at all, that hardens the heart (reducing sorrow for sin, estimation or favorable opinion of God, desire to become like Christ and submissiveness to the Holy Spirit), and darkens the mind, of man, while righteousness is the exact opposite: anything, at all, that softens the heart (increasing sorrow for sin, estimation of God, etc.), and enlightens the mind, of man. This is why King Benjamin said:

And finally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them. (Mosiah 4:29)

There are innumerable ways and means that the devil uses to harden the heart. When we participate in, or observe, any activity which causes our hearts to become hardened, we sin, even if we are unaware that we are sinning. Luckily, the Savior atones for sins committed in ignorance:

For behold, and also his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have fallen by the transgression of Adam, who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned. (Mosiah 3:11)

However, once we have knowledge of the key, which is whether something hardens, or softens, the heart, then any activity or perception that we willfully engage in, either personally or through purposeful media exposure, that causes our hearts to harden, will condemn us before the Lord:

Now they did not sin ignorantly, for they knew the will of God concerning them, for it had been taught unto them; therefore they did wilfully rebel against God. (3 Nephi 6:18)

It is this will of God concerning man, even the right ways of the Lord (which are forever righteous), which has designed that man’s heart is to function in a heart-softening and heart-breaking environment. If we willfully rebel against that will and feed our hearts perversions that harden it, we run the risk of spiritual and temporal captivity and destruction.

Two ways to feel

Heart desensitization makes it harder to feel anything, both good and bad. A hard heart cannot feel the good words of God, because that requires heart sensitivity. Said Nephi to Laman and Lemuel:

Ye are swift to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder. (1 Nephi 17:45)

A hard heart also loses the ability to feel bad things, or things that come from the devil. In order for a hard-hearted man to feel something, he must do one of two things: either he must repent of his sins, gaining heart sensitivity once again, or he must engage in even greater sin excursions.

The latter choice will initially allow the man to feel something once again, but because sin has a heart-hardening effect, he will yet again be left numb and desensitized, requiring an even greater amount and darker type of sensory stimulation. This cycle must repeat until the man is left completely senseless, numb and cold-hearted, unfeeling towards everything, and filled with anger at all the universe because of his condition. Such men become “vessels of wrath” (D&C 76:33) and all “the heavens weep [over them], seeing these shall suffer” (Moses 7:37.)

Using a heart-hardness test

The angel prophesied that the most abominable church would have dominion over all the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues and people. It can be expected, therefore, that we are going to be absolutely swamped with propaganda coming from that quarter, and every last bit of media will become infected with their perversions. The desensitization that comes from this group’s media output is a real and present danger to the souls of men.

We routinely test our water for hardness and our pipes for scale, but surely the state of our hearts is even more important. Using the heart as a gauge, all things that are presented to us can be filtered, so that only heart-softening media surrounds us and heart-hardening media is removed. It may be wise to systematically go through all the media we routinely pay attention to, to determine whether it hardens or softens our heart.

People aren’t used to viewing sin in terms of its heart-hardening effect, so you may be questioned by your spouse, your children, your neighbors or even by other Mormons and Christians as to why you are removing this or that media from your life. The answer to such questions can be quite simple:

“Because it hardens the heart.”

Using a heart-hardening gauge allows a person to much more easily see (and explain to others) what is and is not sin-promoting material.

An example of perverse media: pornography

For example, if we filter pornography through a heart-hardening gauge, we can plainly see that pornography hardens the heart rather quickly and thoroughly. This is because of its extreme perversity. In Justin’s Connecting with Pixels post, he mentioned a web site that openly talks about the effects of pornography. That site says:

First of all, there is clear evidence that long-term pornography use sets people up for feeling more depressed and empty than those who do not use. One big reason for this is that the pleasure center in the brain gets so worn out by constant artificial stimulation that it simply stops being able to respond to more natural kinds of pleasure.

Basically, you slowly start to become numb or desensitized to everyday activities. (What are the effects of porn anyway?)

Artificial stimulation is the correct terminology, for pornography presents a perverse form of sexuality to the viewer as if it were normal, natural, human behavior. The list of pornographic perversions is exceedingly long.

According to the right ways of the Lord, sexual relations between an intact husband and his intact wife (no genital mutilations for either one) is ideal, right, proper and edifying. This is the pattern to which all other sexual relations must be compared. Everything outside of a husband and wife having sex is perversion of the pattern given by God. So, let’s see just how perverse pornography is.

Righteous, marital sex involves no money.

The pornographic perversion of sex, on the other hand, does involves money, the actors being paid to have sex, making them all prostitutes.

Righteous, marital sex is between two people who know and have a vested interest in each other.

The pornographic perversion of sex often involves complete strangers with no attachments, whatsoever.

Righteous, marital sex is between people who love each other.

In the pornographic perversion of sex, the performers feel and express no genuine love for one another.

Righteous, marital sex deepens the love that the matrimony has for one another, giving them greater intimacy with each other and softening their hearts one towards the other.

The pornographic perversion of sex treats sex as a mechanical process, a series of movements that they must act out in front of the camera and crew with no intimacy, love or requirement or need to feel anything, whatsoever, towards the other person they are working with. In fact, the way performers actually are able to get through their “work day” on the set is through detachment. This has a heart-hardening effect upon both the actors, crew and viewers, who are all aware, and accepting, of this perverse condition.

As adults are designed by God to have sex, the genitals of a man and his wife, in their natural state, are hairy, which are signs of adulthood.

The pornographic perversion of sex has performers shave their pubic hairs, so that they look like large children having sex.

Righteous, marital relations typically begin with foreplay.

The pornographic perversion of sex often completely skips it, diving right away into sexual intercourse.

Sweet talking and kissing, including declarations of love, typically accompany marital relations.

Such things are often either eliminated altogether or cut down to a bare minimum in pornography.

Strong, permanent connections are demonstrated in marital relationships, in which the man and his wife feel strongly attached and attracted to each other and this feeling is demonstrated both before, during and after sexual relations.

As noted above, in pornography, detachment is the norm, with actors showing their willingness to have multiple, temporary flings, with no apparent feeling of attachment, whatsoever, towards the sexual partner(s).

Sexual relations in a marriage are spontaneous and largely undirected. If there is any direction, it comes from the participants only, each one taking cues from his or her spouse.

Not so in the pornographic perversion. The performers are told what to do, and when to do it, by the director. They are given the location, the mode of dress, the positions, the actions, the timing, the angles, the words to say or not say, etc. The whole thing is externally directed. In fact, although it is “technically” sex, there is not much relating between the actors that goes on, as each one is following the director’s instructions, so it can hardly be called sexual relations. Although what the director and crew says is typically not recorded, every viewer watches with this understanding of external direction in mind, therefore, the atmosphere is one of direction, nonetheless.

Righteous, marital sex comes with the choice of sexual form and position, according to what they feel like doing in the moment.

The pornographic perversion of sex removes that choice. The performers must do what the director tells them to do, going through a set number of sexual forms and positions, whether they like it or not, or they risk not getting paid or getting blacklisted and not getting any more work.

Righteous, marital sex comes with enjoyment. In other words, they engage in sexual relations because they enjoy sexual relations with each other.

The pornographic perversion of sex cares little about enjoyment. Often the performers are obviously not having a good time (and this is desirable to many directors), yet they must perform nonetheless, because a contract or money is involved. Such feeling is communicated into the camera and this hardens the heart of the viewers and actors involved.

An intact man with his intact wife will penetrate deeply and stay deep, rocking back and forth. In such a position, you can’t see their genitals, because they are stuck to each other, as if they were literally one flesh.

Pornography perverts this natural position by making the performers assume an unnatural position (leaning back and away from the camera) and thrusting hard, so that the genitals can be clearly illuminated by lighting and filmed and so that the male member can be seen going in and out. The mechanical movements of this unnatural position is what pornography seeks to exploit as normal, everyday sex, which, of course, it isn’t.

Righteous, marital sex is designed so that the man ejaculates into the woman’s vagina. Even if she doesn’t get pregnant by this, the deposited semen seems to have some kind of healthful regulation upon her body.

This natural process is aborted in pornography and substituted with a perversion. The male performer must exit the female performer and masturbate until he ejaculates on her externally. This is called the “money shot.”

Righteous, marital sex is safe sex, in the sense of social security, each one feeling secure with each other. This grounds both the man and his wife, creating a feeling of social foundation, safety and security.

The pornographic perversion of sex takes insecure performers, and more especially insecure women, who have typically gone through some kind of sexual abuse at some point in their lives, who have left their families and other sources of security and who, being on their own, are looking for something secure, and then it incorporates them into the “family of X.” But instead of giving them a sense of social security, it plays upon their insecurities, giving them an insecure and predatory business environment, meaning that they are under the express understanding that they must perform as told and expected to under threat of being being fired and blacklisted. Some family, indeed.

Righteous, marital sex is physically safe sex, as it protects from STD’s transmitted from strange, temporary partners.

The pornographic perversion of sex is physically unsafe sex, as it promotes unprotected sex with multiple strangers. The illusion of routine medical testing it presents to the public is just that: an illusion, for many times these are just faked anyway to get the performers to feel better about doing dangerous work.

Righteous, marital sex does not require any drug preparations to “get in the mood.”

The pornographic perversion of sex routinely makes sure that copious amounts of alcohol and drugs are at hand for the performers, so that they are more apt to perform such strong perversions, with their minds already clouded and their hearts already desensitized by the effects of the narcotics and alcohol.

These and many other perversions essentially make pornography a sexual middle finger pointed directly at the Lord, as if the devil were looking up and saying, “Look at how I’ve confounded the sexuality of man!” All who participate in it, as performer, crew, distributor or consumer, whether they know it or not, are having their hearts turned rock hard, because of the enormous strength of its perversion.

Once the heart is sexually hardened, it cannot feel what a normal, sensitive heart can feel, yet it has the same or greater desires to feel. Therefore, if repentance isn’t relied upon and resorted to, which will soften the heart so it can feel again, the viewer of pornography must viewer “harder core” pornography to be able to feel something. But as I said above, this just numbs the heart further, resulting in a need for even harder, hardcore pornography.

Other types of perverse media

I don’t want to make this post a book (too late, I know), so I will just briefly mention a few others that have a rapid, heart-hardening effect on mankind.

Violent media

The heart is supposed to feel sorrow when it witnesses violence (or any other sin.) If we watch a program on television or in the movies in which there is a violent act and it doesn’t cause our heart to sorrow for the sins of the world, it is an indication that our hearts have been hardened by what we are watching. Once a heart is hardened by violence, more explicit violence is needed to get the same sensory rush. There is a reason why all the crime shows nowadays are almost always about murder. The non-violent crimes of theft, etc. no longer give television’s desensitized audience a sufficient sensory rush to cause them to buy the products shown during the commercials. So, murder is now the top topic, even for news shows. After all, they have sponsors, too.

Prideful media

Listening to the prideful lyrics of a song or watching any prideful behavior or boasting in one’s own strength without immediately recognizing the sin and feeling sorrow for it hardens one’s heart rather quickly. Music has a powerful influence over the heart and if certain types of prideful, boasting music is listened to on a daily or consistent basis, the heart will harden and imitate the behavior. In fact, anything that hardens the heart will end up influencing the (now hardened) heart to imitate the bad behavior that caused it to harden. So, the sinful material serves a dual purpose in the hands of the devil. He first uses it to harden the heart, then he uses it to to control the people.

Lying media

How many times in soap operas and other types of television shows, movies, etc., do we see lies presented as “little?” Ah, but if the liars are pretty, then it’s okay, right? Isn’t it interesting that lies are works of darkness, yet are often described as “white?” All of this is conditioning propaganda to get the heart in a hardened state.

Witchcraft and sorcery media

Have you noticed the trend among the population concerning witchcraft and sorcery, how it is no longer considered an abomination, but is now fashionable and in vogue? Isn’t it interesting that sorcery was a widespread feature among the landscape of the Nephites at the end of their civilization?

And it came to pass that there were sorceries, and witchcrafts, and magics; and the power of the evil one was wrought upon all the face of the land, even unto the fulfilling of all the words of Abinadi, and also Samuel the Lamanite. (Mormon 1:19)

Satanic rituals are now routinely performed in front of our eyes during mass media events. The general populace may not know that they are witnessing rituals of sorcery, but they are becoming accustomed to it and eventually will be made to fully embrace it, for all sorcery and witchcraft hardens the heart, preparing the heart for demonic possession and control. Like all sin, that is its purpose.

A poisonous mix or concoction

We can expect the great and abominable church to combine the various perversions into a great, magical, heart-hardening and mind-blinding potion. This is what they currently feed to all those who pertain to the secret combinations of the world and this jet black media will, eventually, be fed undiluted to the general public. So, violence and pride and sexual perversion and lies and all manner of wickedness will be combined together into some form of horrific snuff media, which the masses will consume all day, all the time. We are not there, yet, but it will come, for that is the plan.

It may seem to you that such abominations in media surely will not be accepted by the public, or perhaps you think that you would never be one of those who will accept them, but remember the words of Nephi concerning the “flaxen cords” of the devil:

And there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the devil, for he is the founder of all these things; yea, the founder of murder, and works of darkness; yea, and he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever. (2 Nephi 26:22)

It all starts out with a flaxen cord of dimmed (distracting) media, until we are accustomed to it, then we are introduced ever so subtly to stronger cords of darkened (poisoned) media, until we are accustomed to that. Finally, he binds us down with very strong cords of murder (snuff) and works of darkness, which we will swallow whole without any ability to resist. Yes, it can happen to you and to me, if we do not cut the devil’s cords which he has upon us now, even if they are presently only “flaxen cords.”

Is your heart desensitized?

Heart desensitizing media is found everywhere, even in supposedly innocent places. The truly softened heart feels sorrow for the littlest sin and the enlightened mind perceives it immediately, whereas a hard heart can’t feel it, at all, nor can a dark mind see it.

For example, the other day I was watching a Wiggles show with my son and one of the characters asked a second character if he had done something. He denied it, even though everyone saw him do it. This happened three times. I didn’t catch it until the third time, after which I did a double take and said, “The guy lied three times!” The whole group was laughing about it the entire time and my mind just thought of it as a joke, as kidding around, but when it happened the third time, I finally saw that this was no joke, that this guy was outright lying, attempting to deceive the first character, but the other characters were just playing along like it was funny. I thought, “Teaching children that lying is funny is not a message they ought to get.” But I was more embarrassed by the realization that my mind was so much darkened and my heart so much hardened that I didn’t catch the lie until the third time!

Sin has become so commonplace in mass media, so normalized, that we often can’t perceive the “tiny” ones anymore. In reality, since the Lord said:

I, the Lord, cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance (D&C 1:31)

there is no such creature as a “tiny” sin. The idea of sin being classified as small or great comes from a hard heart, which considers “small sins” as not that bad. In truth, all sin is bad, but sin only varies in its heart-hardening effects. Some sins harden the heart faster and more completely than other sins. Nevertheless, all sins, even ones that only slightly harden the heart, and which do so slowly, cut us off from the Lord, and therefore, have death as their wages. Thus, it is vital that we be able to perceive what is and is not sin. Luckily, the Lord has given us the keys to discernment, even a mind that sees and a heart that feels. He has also given us the way to see and feel, if we have been blinded and desensitized by the great and abominable church: repentance.

Therefore, I suggest that we all put our water hardness tests down and perform instead a heart hardness test. Go ahead and test yourself. If you find that you can’t see certain sins in mass media anymore, or that you don’t feel sorrow when you perceive sinful behavior, it may be an indication that there are perverse influences in your life which you have accepted as normal. Perhaps it is time to do a systematic house-cleaning of all such heart-hardening influences.

  1. As I was preparing this essay for publication, another thought occurred to me and I intended to include it somewhere, but as the post was so long, I got distracted while editing it and altogether forgot about this other thought until I pushed the publish button.

Now, however, the thought has popped into my head again. I suppose I can go back into the post and stick it somewhere, since no one, as yet, has read it, but I think I’ll just put it down here in this comment.

The thought is this: it seems to me that there is a difference between the heart hardening effects of sin and the heart hardening effects of narcotics and alcohol.

Sin seems to have a more direct and permanent effect on the heart, which can only be erased through repentance and faith on the Lord, whereas narcotics and alcohol seem to have an indirect, and thus less permanent effect (or even temporary effect) on this spiritual organ.

I wonder if this is because drugs and alcohol affect the physical organs first, which then affect the spiritual organs (since the spirit and body are connected), whereas sin affects the spiritual organs first, which then affects the physical organs.

The indirect affect of drugs and alcohol upon the spiritual heart only seem to last insofar as the drugs and alcohol have the body seized under its influence. Once the booze and drugs wear off (and there is no addiction), a man can again come to his senses, and regain heart sensitivity, (at least, whatever degree of sensitivity he had prior to using these narcotics.) Unfortunately, the temporary nature of narcotics’ ability to harden the heart can make it much easier for a man to commit sin while desensitized in his narcotic state, and such sin directly hardens the heart, so that he ends up twice as hardened then if he just committed sin without the narcotic. Then when the effects of the drug wear off, he is left with a stained soul from whatever sins he engaged in while under the influence.

Obviously, everyone has heard that being intoxicated and stoned makes it easier to commit sin, and many people actually think of these activities as sin, so this isn’t any new revelation. But I wonder that if intoxication and drug use indirectly hardens the heart, perhaps we have a reason as to why abusing such substances is spiritually dangerous. Also, if the heart hardening effects are only temporary (assuming that more permanent bodily changes have not occurred from the abuse, creating addiction), this may explain why a man is different when sober and when drunk or stoned.

I’ve never looked into intoxication and drug use, but I would be curious about what studies have been done as to changes in brain chemistry while under these influences. It wouldn’t surprise me to find that such changes were the corresponding physical counterpart to spirit-heart hardening.

  2. Well, I learned a lot about porn from this post.
No but seriously I liked this part you put in the comment section as I find it more useful in general. I think you oughta include it in the OP.

Interesting how all of our minds seem directed to many of the same scriptures when we write a post. I was gonna hold off till Sunday to post mine so that Liv’s post had more time up there. But I guess when it rains it pours on LDS Anarchy.

  3. I was recently watching some documentaries on the X industry and so I guess it was in my mind when I wrote this. I didn’t mean to focus so heavily on this particular perversion, but I’ve of late become alarmed at how accepted pornography has become by just about everyone. I remember, for example, on my mission, going on splits with another elder and we ended up visiting someone he and his companion had been teaching. This man, who we visited at a restaurant or bar or something, had accepted the gospel and then returned to his sins, even to pornography. Not meaning that he was consuming it, but that he had become a performer. I was amazed at the spirit I felt around the man and with the look of money love in his eyes. He was positively consumed with greed. He said he could not resist the money.

On another occasion, after I had returned from my mission, I remember sitting in a college class and for whatever reason the subject of pornography came up in the classroom. Absolutely everyone defended pornography, even the professor. I was the only one who vilified it and I said we had every right to try to resist its encroachment and stamp it out of existence, because it was evil, etc. I didn’t know, at the time, all the particulars of the industry, but I was certain it was not a man-made endeavor, but was inspired of the devil.

On a third occasion, I was hired by a distribution company, that is until I found out some of the “product” that they distributed was pornography. I got to know a little about the distribution of this stuff and didn’t like what I saw, though I still couldn’t put my finger on it, as to exactly what was wrong with it all.

Again, on another occasion, a friend of my brother’s, who considered himself handsome to the ladies, came out and told him and me that he was considering becoming a performer (he had been approached), because the money was tremendous and wouldn’t it be great to “do that as a living?” He had grown up on porn and had acclimated himself to it, accepting its perversions as normal, and now was ready to make the leap right into the business. My brother and I tried to talk him out of it. This was interesting, as my brother was now an atheist, having abandoned his religion, yet still saw pornography as a sleazy business, if not an immoral one. I don’t know whether he ever ended up doing anything. But the lies this perverted media spreads is bought by everyone, young and old alike.

I, myself, grew up on porn. When I was younger my older brothers used to have girly magazines, books, posters and movies snuck into the house whenever they could. Then we converted to Mormonism, but my exposure to it was very young. so, I guess all this has colored my view of it. Hence the long part of this post that deals with it. Essentially, I couldn’t resist making it the poster child of perversion, because on absolutely every level pornography is perverted.

  4. Good post.

Almost any of the “super-stimuli” exhibit that threshold-effect — whereby they desensitize the receptors, and a person needs to “up their dose”.

Anything that can cause us to exhibit the pathological drug-seeking behaviors we term “addiction” — works by tapping directly into the normal reward-pathways of our brain that it uses to assign reward to and seek out experiences it perceives as “positive” or “valuable”.

These neural reward pathways were designed to operate within the natural, environmental range of stimuli — but these commoditized “drug” products [chemical drugs, processed food, flashing lights on toys and televisions, pornography, etc.] are professional crafted to maximize the reward properties — and they exceed the reward system’s normal operating parameters.

The brain gets a skewed vision of how “rewarding” that bit of super-stimuli is — and can become fixated on seeking it out with a ravenous appetite [which we’ve come to call “addiction”].

  5. A few months ago I watched a movie that wasn’t Christian or anything, just your average PG, Hollywood produced movie. While watching it I started making connections between the storyline and my walk with God. The spirit came over me and I was shown some really good things pertaining to my relationship with Christ. I kept pondering on the whole thing and finally asked the Lord a few days later how a Hollywood, i.e., SATAN, produced movie could inspire me so much. My thoughts didn’t stay on movies though. I also considered music. Obviously the only heavenly music was the Mormon tabernacle choir. I also really believed that Christian Rock was deceptive. Putting godly lyrics with Satan’s music was a very crafty way of drawing in innocent teenagers. Get them hooked on electric guitars and drums then before you know it they’ll be head banging to Hollywood Undead right? Yet there were christian rock songs that would make me burn with desire to serve God. I was so confused.

I will try my best to put into words what was explained to me but as most of the contributors and readers of this blog know…when God gives you understanding, it is sometimes a LOT of information given instantaneously. And not necessarily in English. So please forgive me if I don’t convey it perfectly.

What I was told is that on this earth there are “works of men” “works of Satan” and “works of God”. This encompasses everything to some degree. Books, music, movies, etc….The works of men are most prevalent. Second are works of God and in third place are works of satan. I would have thought satan’s works to be first but I didn’t argue. I was then told that we should base what we watch, listen to etc… on our ability to discern. I was told, “It all depends on the spirit of discernment that you have” Without the gift of discernment any one of us would be much better off sticking to hymns and throwing our TV’s out. But WITH it we should feel a little more free.

Most everything has elements of all three in different portions. I actually have the spirit of discernment and sometimes the spirit will say, right out of the gate, “don’t watch this” And if I don’t heed the warning I am always sorry later, being plagued by an evil spirit or just having a struggle to rid my mind of images. I also try to limit works of men for the same reason you mentioned, distraction. It would be akin to listening to someone talk about their temporal life. Fine in moderation but not something you want to spend too much time doing. At least not if you have loftier goals in mind (heart):)

Not all of my kids have the discerning gift (some do) so I have to monitor what they watch, listen to and read. As far as your “Wiggles” experience, don’t you think it would be better to point out to your kids that “that guy just lied” rather than throwing the t.v. out? In my experience, having been a “no TV, no movies, no novels, no music.” parent for a lot of years, when my older kids were exposed to the ways of the world (inevitable) they didn’t know how to handle it. They were so naive and unprepared. I remember how shocked my son was to learn that people actually lie let alone the many other things his “friends” taught him. I regret not explaining things to him myself now, so that he could have the necessary weapons instead of him not even knowing there was evil in the world. Anyway, lots of thoughts on this subject but I don’t want to write a book in the comments either-Lol. Thanks for this post, you’ve given me a lot to ponder.

  6. As far as your “Wiggles” experience, don’t you think it would be better to point out to your kids that “that guy just lied” rather than throwing the t.v. out?

Lol. I didn’t throw the television out. And I’m not suggesting that a person do that, either.

The point I was trying to make is that there is a specific reaction we are supposed to have when we witness any sinful behavior, even pretended sinful behavior. First, we ought to be able to discern the sinful behavior, our minds being sufficiently enlightened by Christ to see it. Secondly, we ought to feel sadness, or sorrow for sin, when we behold any sinful behavior (even the pretended kind.) If we are unable to discern the sinful behavior, it is an indication that our minds have become darkened. And if we do not feel sorrow for sin, it is an indication that our hearts have become hard (desensitized.)

Such blindness and hardness comes from perversion in our lives, real or vicarious (through media feeding.) Meaning that we have experienced perversion ourselves, or vicariously through media, enough for our minds and hearts to have become acclimated to it, so that they no longer have these proper reactions to it, considering the perversions normal.

Performing a test is simple. Watch or listen to some media that has poison in it and observe your reaction. Can you discern the sin-promoting material? Does it make your heart feel sorrow? If the answer is, “No,” for either of these questions, repentance is in order.

The three-stage process of transformation runs into problems when we simultaneously administer health and light via the word of God to our souls, while also administering Satanic poisons. The one softens the heart, while the other hardens it. It gets you nowhere on the path.

We are going to be surrounded with poisons and darkness. That is a given, since we are in the latter-days. So, it is unreasonable that a person will be able to eliminate all such sinful influences from his life. The problem lies when we self-administer the poison. The evil gifts are and will abound around us, but we are not to touch them. In other words, seeking the best gifts of the Spirit while simultaneously touching the evil gifts is counter-productive. The best gifts will continue to elude you.

For a person whose sins have been remitted because their heart is broken and softened, sin has no appeal. Put that person in an environment of sin and they will “walk mournfully before the Lord,” sorrowing for the sins of the world, “touching not the evil gifts.” Such people have the proper reaction and are safe.

For all others, though, who have yet to have received such a remission of sins, who still have cords upon them, even if only the flaxen kind, they must first get their hearts into a softened state of brokenness. Such people must retreat from Babylon and come to the Lord, for a time, until their hearts and minds are back in the proper polarities as they were when they were little children. Once they have repented and become as little children, then they can be placed once again in the midst of Babylon, and they will properly mourn for the sins of the world which they now can plainly discern in her.

It is not the darkness of Babylon that gives discernment, but the light of Christ. So, although “if they never should have bitter they could not know the sweet,” it is the contrast between the two that is the important part, not the darkness. That contrast only comes from the light of Christ, for the things of the devil are too dark to discern much of anything.

If the spirit missionaries in paradise were to travel to hell without bringing with them the light and gospel of Christ, as soon as they entered that domain the darkness there would engulf them and they themselves would be taken prisoners. The same principle applies to us in mortality. All things must be done in wisdom and order. If you are ready for Babylon, then by all means take it on using the light of Christ, but if you find that Babylon still has its tares in you, don’t mess around with its poison. Eliminate it, as you can, and get yourself right before the Lord first, then use His light to free the other souls who currently have flaxen or strong cords upon them in Babylon.

  7. I didn’t throw the television out. And I’m not suggesting that a person do that, either.

It’s not a bad idea though. The flicker-rate of the TV puts your brain into a highly-suggestive passive mode [Here’s an article about it].

It’s to get you into a state where you no longer use the critical-reasoning portion of your brain, and just passively accept information that comes at you — like advertising and subliminal sigils and messages.

Another interesting thing I read that goes along with that — Sony’s patented technology to make you have to interact with your commercials, like having to shout “McDonalds!” before the commercial will end.

  8. Justin, yes, I’ve heard about that research. Thanks for posting those links. For the record, I do plan on throwing my television out at some point. Currently I refuse to pay for television/cable, but I still do own one. The Wiggles program I watched on YouTube, not on television.

  9. I saw a good documentary about the topic of porn 5 years ago. It was called Traffic Control. It was good in that it filled in some of the blanks for me. I was never exposed to porn so this film kind of provided the missing link in some questions that I had about how the corruption of the youth was progressing so rapidly.

But in another way the documentary was a big waste of time. My wife had seen the first screening and one of the ex-porn stars was there answering questions afterwards. It was a great spiritual experience because she was able to speak with the spirit about her conversion and how Christ had rescued her. So my sweetie was all excited about it and invited me to the next one. I went and was also highly motivated after watching it. BUT….

At the showing that I attended the question and answer period proceeding the feature was done by this guy who was sort of presented as the hero spotlighted in the film. Their so-called “solution” to the problem of porn was a political one. I asked a lot of questions and listened and then towards the end the spirit struck me and I asked “what do we do when the politicians don’t do what we ask them to?” The filmmakers had stated at least twice in the documentary itself that “Not a single politician was willing to even talk with them on this topic”…everyone was silent for a few moments…then the guy who was introducing legislation ideas from his think-tank and ‘slacktivist’ group said something to the effect of “Well…you gotta have faith in the system.”

I learned that night some helpful info on how to battle perversion and learned to value my freedom from the insidious influence of porn. Plus I knew I had to use that to serve youth who were under attack from it…BUT…I think that might have also been where I learned a much deeper lesson….and started to discover my inner anarchist. Interestingly enough I just read Liv’s comments elsewhere about the benefit from sharing conversion experiences…and well everything links up right…but this event and the accompanying revelation marked a huge turning point for me.

For starters I perceived that similar to what Liv has expressed here, there was a downside to my underexposure as well. Not that I was anything but grateful for my being sheltered from porn. But I could see that there were many things that kept me naïve and unable to help myself or anyone else around me, as whatever effects one portion of humanity effects us all. Its just very very dangerous for those of us who THINK that were not effected by it. So yeah the issue of porn became personal to me when witnessing the way children these days are targeted.

But we are fooled if we fail to see the greater perversion of the political process. Many will say that the two can’t really be compared. I would have to firmly agree. The perversion of politics is worse. THE TWO ARE IN BED TOGETHER. But as you have, even somewhat graphically pointed out, LDSA, These are CHILDREN in the pornos, they are CHILDREN when they get pulled and pushed into indecent exposure and corralled into the SEX INDUSTRY….THOSE INVOLVED remain children like Alice in Wonderland, stunted in their emotional and mental development to a spectacular degree. IT IS CHILDREN WHO THE INDUSTRY HAS NOW SET ITS SITES ON. But those in Government? They are not children…they are not innocent in any degree. They are astute. They KNOW what they are doing. So if you see two people in bed in an unholy sexual act…but one of those people is a CHILD….tell me…who is the evil one or the one who has done evil? Yes the smut peddlers are not innocent, I realize this. BUT THEY ARE POLITICIANS? Do we realize that?

The political machine is composed of a priest class…they are in fact priests…just like Lord Vader says on Star Wars…”Do not underestimate the power of the Force.” WELL THEY DON’T and neither should WE. The power that they have is derived FROM the Force. The Force has a Dark Side and a Light Side….not an Evil and a Good side….just a balance of Dark and Light. And arguably the balance at any given moment is more dark than light more feminine (in quantity) than masculine. Just a kind of Universal Principle of Ladies first is all that is. The so-called Powers of Darkness KNOW THIS….and they use it to fuel their falsehoods as long as we will let them. They have made the mistake of supposing the Divine Darkness to be more powerful and superior to the light. They like it because of its CHILD LIKE QUALITIES, which they have lost. So they prey upon it and use it to do THEIR bidding. So fighting the Perversion of Porn without TARGETING the Perversion of Politricks is like declaring war on the PROSTITUTES but letting the PIMPS go free and in fact through our disassociation, upholding and seeing at best, their evil as somehow a separate issue from the evils on the street.

Whereas the connections between the SEX INDUSTRY or the DRUG INDUSTRY or even SEX DRUGS AND ROCK N ROLL Industry are more clearly seen by us…well at least we claim to acknowledge them….BUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IS THAT A PREACHER POINTS IT OUT TO US….and then we perpetuate imbalance and problems by thinking that Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll are 1) All three bad and should be avoided outright or tightly controlled by “Guess who” 2) Just go naturally hand in hand. But look closely at what is going on. There are definite connections between these groups on various levels. But without it being pointed out by revelation …that info is WORSE THAN WORTHLESS to us. We either get motivated by RELIGIOUS LEADERS or by POLITICAL LEADERS. But these two are one and the same. Not because they were introduced in this life….but rather because they STEM FROM AND ARE HANDS AND FEET EYES AND EARS of THE SAME BEING who was the enemy of Humanity since the foundation of the world. THE FALSE GODVERNMENT was the one who introduced all the other parties and called them together to swear allegiance to ITSELF.

The perversion in General Conference or on the news is THE MOTHER PERVERSION from there things like porn pop up as a reaction and scientific effect of the SCIENTISTS IN WHITE ROBES, THE DOCTORS IN WHITE ROBES, THE MEN IN WHITE SHIRTS THE PRIEST CLASS. That is the test that we need to conduct. Without being sensitive to THE Perversion….then we can not see the perversion. THE perversion must be abolished and utterly destroyed….the perversion is only Good Gone Bad ….when we talk about porn were not actually talking about perversion but about something that has been perverted. If we desire to right it and return it to its natural purity….then we have to remove perversion…until we do we are not going to be very accurate or all that revealing in our TESTS ….not all the data is in if we simply determine that we are sensitive to this or that type of medium. That’s like picking up a sword and seeing how easily we can cut ourselves. When we are in a sword fight we are not actually fighting a sword are we? If we think so or allow avoiding distractions to become a distraction …then we will loose.

  10. This reminds me of this:

Additionally, Joseph Smith writes in D&C 123: 13 that the LDS should expose all the secret combinations had among us, specifically, his words were that “we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them.” (Is the topic of “secret combinations” taboo in the LDS church?)

There are at least two possible ways of being exposed to the works of darkness. You can be exposed to the illusion set up by the dark work itself. This is the image of itself that the dark work presents to the world. For most of mankind, this is how they obtain knowledge of dark works. Unfortunately, dark works never call themselves “dark works,” so the illusion is always a deception.

Another way is by preachers, reverends, priests, parents, etc., simply telling people, “that thing over there is bad, avoid it,” without giving any details as to why it is bad. Although the preachers may be correct and “that thing” may in fact be a dark work, and they can see its darkness, merely telling someone to avoid something and leaving it at that is usually not enough to stop them from investigating, as we are all curious cats.

The gospel way is to fully expose the darkness under the light of Christ. To leave no stone unturned, to explicitly show its filthiness, or as Joseph said, to bring “to light all the hidden things of darkness.” Only when a person has this information–and can see the dark works, not just the illusion, but the actual dark works–can they see that such things are abominations and they are no longer attracted to them.

    Elder Chantdown, you wrote,

But as you have, even somewhat graphically pointed out, LDSA,

It was in this spirit of dragging out the darkness in all its graphic filth in order that we may view it, that I wrote about pornography in the way I did. The same thing could have been done for violence, lies, and the rest. All of these things are abominations. It is my opinion that unless a person can have these dark works illuminated in such a fashion, the illusion presented to the world will always be the lie that is believed.

I am of the opinion that when people come of age, being sufficiently mature to learn about the things of the world around them, that we should not sugar-coat things, but should tell them the truth, even “things as they truly are and truly will be.” Everyone needs to know about the things of God, but they also need to know about the works of the devil, but no one should go to the devil to learn his works, for he will give them only an illusion, a deception. So, I think it is perfectly okay to shelter children from harmful influences, but when they come of age, they need to understand the spiritual dangers that exist in the world, and also how to use the light of Christ, and then they can use that light of Christ to protect themselves while being in the world. Without this dual process, sheltered children being turned out into the world is like sending them to the slaughter. On the other hand, introducing dark works to children before they are sufficiently mature can harm their delicate natures. So, these things must be done in wisdom, according to the conditions found among men.

I wish I had had someone expound all this stuff to me as a young man. I wish I had a good understanding of the hidden works of darkness and how the gospel is supposed to function, because then it would have been a no-brainer to avoid all these dark works. I wouldn’t be doing it because “this is what my parents taught me” or “this is what my church teaches,” but because the fully exposed dark works could be plainly seen as abominations, and I would just naturally want to avoid them. Obviously, agency is a variable, so there would be some who choose abominations once they are exposed as abominations, but for the most part, the only way the devil can attract men to his works is through deception. Once he is unveiled as a destroyer of souls, seeking to kill us, humans typically want nothing more to do with the devil or his abominable works.

Which brings me to another point you brought up. I don’t believe in these “political solutions.” Heck, I’m an anarchist, why would I? There is only one sure way to destroy the works of darkness, and that is by the power of the Spirit. I sent these scriptures to someone today, but it bears re-quoting:

“And for this cause, that men might be made partakers of the glories which were to be revealed, the Lord sent forth the fulness of his gospel, his everlasting covenant, reasoning in plainness and simplicity—to prepare the weak for those things which are coming on the earth, and for the Lord’s errand in the day when the weak shall confound the wise, and the little one become a strong nation, and two shall put their tens of thousands to flight. And by the weak things of the earth the Lord shall thresh the nations by the power of his Spirit.”

“Wherefore, I call upon the weak things of the world, those who are unlearned and despised, to thresh the nations by the power of my Spirit; and their arm shall be my arm, and I will be their shield and their buckler; and I will gird up their loins, and they shall fight manfully for me; and their enemies shall be under their feet; and I will let fall the sword in their behalf, and by the fire of mine indignation will I preserve them.”

The pornographic industry (and everything else) just needs a good threshing by the power of the Spirit.

  11. A few other quotes I had intended to include in this post but neglected to are the following:

LUCIFER: You can buy anything in this world for money. (LDS Endowment)

The above quote came to mind as I was writing the bit about money being involved in pornographic sex.

The following scripture popped into my mind when I was pondering upon wholesome media:

And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. (2 Nephi 25:26)

  12. Let me clarify what I wrote here:

Without this dual process, sheltered children being turned out into the world is like sending them to the slaughter. On the other hand, introducing dark works to children before they are sufficiently mature can harm their delicate natures.

I mean by this that on the one hand you can turn innocent (sheltered) children over to the world when they are of age, but if you haven’t taught them of the spiritual dangers that are in the world, nor how to use the gospel in their lives to protect themselves, you are sending them to be slaughtered. Their hearts will be come hardened by the perversions that will surround them. This is why we are under charge to teach our children the first principles of the gospel:

And again, inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents. For this shall be a law unto the inhabitants of Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized. And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands. And they shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord.

Now, I, the Lord, am not well pleased with the inhabitants of Zion, for there are idlers among them; and their children are also growing up in wickedness; they also seek not earnestly the riches of eternity, but their eyes are full of greediness.

On the other hand, if you teach them of the spiritual dangers that are in the world before their minds and hearts are sufficiently mature, meaning before they are of appropriate age to learn these things, you can cause harm to their delicate natures.

The dual process that I speak of, then, is first that the spiritual dangers of the world must be taught to children at the appropriate time, meaning when they are sufficiently mature enough to process the information and secondly, that children be taught to live the gospel and receive the Holy Ghost, taking the Spirit for their guide.

  13. “…sheltered children being turned out into the world is like sending them to the slaughter. On the other hand, introducing dark works to children before they are sufficiently mature can harm their delicate natures.”

See THIS is what Im talking about. We can’t pick and choose what we want to look at. Im not saying that we can not or should not exercise a great deal of self control and be very selective with what we look at. Im talking about “look at” as in with our mind’s eye. We are to constantly maintain the image of Christ on the Cross before our “eyes”. That is in a sense a gruesome scene. But we can’t really be fullfilling this commandment unless we are willing to “look at” the key role the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Stains plays in that exact scenario you described.

They are working from within a secret combination to raise up an army of SHELTERED YOUTH which they send directly into Satan’s slaughter. This is very serious. We can hem and haw and say well…”it is not as bad as it could be”. We can also accurately say that the scriptures reveal that it will, in fact, be “waaaay worse, in the Church in the future.” But just deducting that from scripture study and actually allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth of it to your heart are two different things. It is kind of like how after seeing how the porn industry targets children awakened in me a desire to be led by the spirit to EFFECTIVELY fight against those evil works.

This is why prophets of truth seem to be so crazy in the eyes of others. Not because they are tasked with talking to people about the future. People actually talk about the future a lot. But because they see with God’s eyes…and so you talk to them of the “future” and theyre like….”Future? forget about the future…the future is NOW!” We can’t afford to make a mental dissconect between past, present and future. between church and state. The LDS Church will play the central role in this slaughter of the innocents. Not because were smart and we read it in the scriptures which are for us some kind of entertaining “Tommorow’s Newspaper” a “Future Tribune” to which we subscribe and entertain ourselves with discussion groups and Isaiah f#*%ing fan clubs. Its happening NOW….that it will be worse and more apparent later is comepletely beside the point. Thats like one person saying “Man this storm is really bad I guess we should have left with the first warnings but its really bad now” and having his neighbor respond, “Oh stick around buddy, you think this is bad, its gonna get way worse.”….Okay….no $#!+ sherlock….but why would I want to stick around?

Everything that WILL be done by the Church is currently being done…it will only get worse. But how can we even claim to understand or take seriously scriptures like “The Lord can not look upon sin with the least degree of allowance” and not completely withdraw our support to wash our garments clean from the sacrificial blood. Its not like well now they are just guilty of sending sheltered kids out to the world unprepared….and later according to prophecy they will actually expose young children to disgusting deeds of darkness and mess up their pure natures. Satanic Sexual Ritual Abuse is and has been occuring in the Church that would make your eyes feel SOOTHED by the sight of some average porno.I know its hard to “look at” as in acknowledge and we will be tempted to say well thats not the Official Church persay….Even if not a single general authority was directly involved how does that clear them? They and we are implicit to a great degree since we have been told and refuse to do ANYTHING….let alone ALL WE CAN to “bring to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them.”

  14. I am so thankful right now to have found this site. Thank you brother Joseph! Reading through the comments this morning has been an experience and just what I needed to hear.
I have a couple things to add…I have six kiddos aged 6 through 17, so a little bit of parenting experience. We’ve never had actual “television stations”in our home and like I said earlier, for years we didn’t even own a television so no movies either. When we would visit family the scenario was always the same. My kids would not be interested in the TV at all, and would spend a lot of time and energy trying to get the other children to play. The children who had television could hardly be pulled away. I thought it so strange that my kids, not having a TV, had no interest. Yet the kids who watched it every day couldn’t break away to go play with my kids. This experience is why we will never have TV stations in our home. As it is now I think our family watches too many movies and we too have considered throwing the TV out, although there are a lot of very, very good documentaries and movies out there if we can’t control what we watch then “if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee”

Also, as I said earlier, my older children (2 boys) were very sheltered and as they entered the teenage years and made friends with boys who weren’t sheltered they were bombarded with all kinds of things that they weren’t prepared for. Luckily we have a good relationship and have been able to openly and honestly talk about everything, but I know if we had been “bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them” They wouldn’t have stumbled so much.

In my experience the age your kids can start “learning of these things”, generally, is when they start asking. My oldest asked about sex when he was eight.(my oldest daughter didn’t ask until 12 yrs.) My reaction was embarrassment and sputtering and pretty much telling him I didn’t want to talk about it. Huge mistake! I created the idea in his mind that all sex was perversion so when his buddies showed him porn at 14 yrs. That was how he already viewed it, if that makes sense?

So now we have open discussions in our house. If the kids have questions we answer them honestly and if we’re embarrassed we act like we’re not. We had a family discussion when my oldest daughter started her menstrual cycle. She came out and announced it to the whole family. The older brothers were kind of embarrassed but the younger sisters were looking at her like she was a goddess and asking a million questions so we called a family meeting-Lol. They are all (boys included) well educated on a woman’s cycle now.

We have openly discussed alcohol, drugs, music….pretty much everything in an honest way(all led by the kids’ questions). Where it used to be, when the boys were young, “rock music is from the devil, drugs kill etc…” Now it’s some music is good some is bad and here’s why…and here’s how to tell the difference. If you can’t tell the difference then you shouldn’t listen to it. Teaching kids to cultivate the spirit of God within themselves is key so that they are prepared to resist the fiery darts of the adversary. I’m not a perfect parent and I mess up all the time, but my kids seem to be faring much better now than when they were very sheltered so even though we get a lot of naysayers who think we’re stupid for being so open it works for our family.

  15. I came across a video on YouTube that had Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment, Inc., talking about how Troma wasn’t doing so good as a result of being blacklisted by the mainstream media and I got a kick out of how he spoke of them. In particular, I noticed that his exact words to describe them were: “the big international media conglomerates, the devil-worshiping giants” and also: “the devil-worshiping media conglomerates.” This reminded me of the section of this post that mentions witchcraft and sorcery in the media.

(For those who have never heard of Troma, they are an independent, motion picture studio and distribution company based out of New York City, that has been putting out low budget flicks for almost 40 years now, so Kaufman is an insider in the industry and ought to know what he’s talking about.)

  16. I agree with you about how perverse pornography is but I want to bring up a sincere question for discussion…

Is it always a sin to view it?… Is it always going to harden the heard of the viewer…

You stated: “All who participate in it … consumer … are having their hearts turned rock hard, because of the enormous strength of its perversion.”

You also stated: “The idea of sin being classified as small or great comes from a hard heart … all sin is bad, but sin only varies in its heart-hardening effects.”

Is viewing pornography (and masturbation) a sin IF the ‘consumer’ does not have their hearts hardened as a result? You seemed to think that was an absolute, but I’m not so sure, based on on experience. And I say this as someone who has been trapped in the addiction (20+ years) since the age of 12 but am still able to receive revelation and inspiration from the Holy Ghost. The Spirit has revealed many great truths to my mind and guided me in many ways. Christ has allowed me to overcome the guilt I was placing on myself and realize that even though I am not free of the addiction I can still progress towards Him as I continue to do His will in so many other ways. I feel that eventually I will receive the strength to completely overcome this but in the meantime I feel that, through the mercy and grace of Christ, this is not hardening my heart when I occasionally view pornography and masturbate.

I’m curious about your thoughts on this.

  17. End User,

Is viewing pornography (and masturbation) a sin IF the ‘consumer’ does not have their hearts hardened as a result?

My understanding is that viewing pornography with masturbation will harden one’s heart, even if it is only one time.

Heart desensitization happens by degrees. So, when you write,

I feel that eventually I will receive the strength to completely overcome this but in the meantime I feel that, through the mercy and grace of Christ, this is not hardening my heart when I occasionally view pornography and masturbate.

it is not the mercy and grace of Christ that allows you to occasionally view pornography and masturbate without noticing any heart-hardening effects, but it is the mercy and grace of Christ that causes you to notice your heart becoming hard with regular viewing of pornography.

In other words, whereas before you were totally desensitized to any amount or regularity of pornography so that it didn’t seem to spiritually affect you, now, through the mercy and grace of Christ you have a noticeably adverse, spiritual reaction to it, in sufficient quantities or regularity. So, you have become a little more heart sensitive. But you are still desensitized to it if the quantity is small or occasional.

Again, the reason why a small quantity of porn doesn’t seem to affect your spirituality is because of this desensitization, which is the devil’s work upon the heart, not the Lord’s mercy. The Lord acts by making us more heart sensitive, so that we can eventually discern even the weakest flaxen cord of sin being sown.

And there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the devil, for he is the founder of all these things; yea, the founder of murder, and works of darkness; yea, and he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever.

So, the strong cords of sin cause an adverse reaction to you, by the grace of God, but the flaxen cords do not. That is evidence that your heart is still desensitized to a degree.

The Lord will strive with all of us as He can, even giving inspiration and revelation to people who are not, as yet, sanctified. Hence all the investigators who learn the Book of Mormon is true by the power of the Holy Ghost, gaining a testimony (a revelation) without yet receiving a remission of their sins. Thus, some revelation and inspiration can come to us while our hearts are still hard in various degrees, while other revelations come only to those whose hearts are completely soft, meaning they are not hard in any degree. This is according to the following principle:

And now Alma began to expound these things unto him, saying: It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.

And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.

And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell.

We see by this that “he that will harden his heart” still receives a portion of the word, which is the lesser portion. This is according to the degree of his heart’s hardness. So, the fact that you are still able to obtain inspiration and revelation of God is not evidence that occasional pornography and masturbation has no hardening effect upon your heart.

  18. It’s been awhile since I’ve looked over this post, so I might as well take the time to make a possible correction that I just noticed.

    I wrote,

The pornographic perversion of sex, on the other hand, does involves money, the actors being paid to have sex, making them all prostitutes.

    But then there is this:

    Is Pornography Prostitution?

  19. I was looking at some Facebook pages today and began to wonder about whether its usage tended to promote conceitedness, self-absorption, narcissism and self-esteem, all of which are manifestations of the sin of pride, which, like all sins, hardens one’s heart. I wondered if anyone had written anything about Facebook usage and whether it created narcissists and after searching I found a couple of studies, one which showed a link and a later one which showed that the only link was if a person had an inordinate amount of friends on Facebook. Neither study, though, showed that Facebook created narcissistic people. (It may be that it simply attracted them.) Then I wondered about self-esteem, which is in vogue these days, and whether anyone had written anything about it in light of the gospel. That’s when I found the Dr. Wally blog, which had a bunch of posts on this very topic:

The Book of Mormon, A Latter-day Corrective #6: Different Kinds of Self-Esteem

The Lure and Lore of Self-Esteem

The Gospel at Odds with Self-Esteem

The Lord Offers Something Better than Self-Esteem

Making Peace with Ourselves: Some Kinds of Esteem Matter More than Others

Perhaps this is one of the reason why Facebook has always bothered me: it makes a degree of self-centeredness socially acceptable, creating an environment in which pride can grow.

  20. The only reason that the modern idea of Self-Esteem is in error is because modern society is in error about what Self is. And so it starts there and logically extends to certain outcomes. The proper idea of Self-Esteem is set forth in the holy scriptures. One is to to esteem his neighbor as himself. Obviously in God’s perfect symmetry or balance we must see that one is not without the other. “I” and “They” are not separate entities at all, except to the fallen mind which sees only separation and doesn’t get the concept of SELF. It does not understand itself because it does not remember that it is merely a part of THE SELF. A good friend of mine compared the arrangement to the difference between elves and a giant. The S-Elf is the Super Elf, she said. We by our”selves” are not alone and are not the ultimate but are parts of something much bigger, in the same way that our”cell”ves are not all that there is to our individual beings but are portions of element taken from the whole and returned to the whole in small and not so small cycles.

As far as facebook goes, it is a thing and things tend to have a way of teaching people about themselves. That is good since without knowledge of self one does not know God the Eternal Father, nor the Son whom He has sent. Facebook is a mirror….it is only a reflection…if we are enamored with it to the point where we mistake it for the source of self and that which is worthy of praise then we do not understand the many ways in which it is not real. While on the other hand if we do not like what we see when we look at facebook, then we are guilty of the same thing only from a different side of the looking glass. That is we are unnecessarily bothered by the reflection. We either esteem our individual selves too much or too little, and this effects our view of “others” since we fail to realize that it is what comes through our own eyes that will reflect back off of such sur-faces as face-book where we mistakenly ass-u-me that we are watching something other than SELF playing out in greater or lesser detail directly dependent on our own private views or “v-yous”. As a thing….there is no reason why facebook can not be a tool for good since it stands to reason that a man or woman who actually feels to do as the scriptures describe and esteem one’s neighbor as one’s self will no doubt notice that a vast majority of one’s neighbors are found on facebook. A true servant of the Lord could just as easily see it as a tool or technique for reaching people where they are (literally and figuratively), dealing with the awful situation of today’s reality but elevating the cyber chatter from the level of cell-block banter to amazing and transcendental connection.

But if one finds fault then that is all they will find. Never realizing that their principled reluctance to take up tools and transmute the tricky energy into real work which pleases the Father…then they will sit at home like the “good son” in the parable of the Prodigal…staying on their rear end as much or more than their facebook using neighbors in a state of judgement and worry which in the end leaves much to be learned whereas the Prodigal returns with real knowledge deserving of great rewards from the Father.
