The chapter heading
The chapter heading of 2 Nephi 3 says the following:
Joseph in Egypt saw the Nephites in vision—He prophesied of Joseph Smith, the latter-day seer; of Moses, who would deliver Israel; and of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.
I have always been taught that this particular chapter contains, as its heading indicates, a prophecy of Joseph in Egypt about Joseph Smith, Jun., Moses and the Book of Mormon. I assumed that every mention of a seer was Joseph Smith and that every mention of a scriptural record was the Book of Mormon. I no longer hold that view.
11 possible personages and 8 possible scriptural records
As I have gone through this chapter, comparing it to the Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis 50: 24-36, I have found 11 possible personages spoken of by either Joseph in Egypt or Lehi. In addition, I see a possibility that 8 separate records are spoken of, not just one (the Book of Mormon). Here is the list of people mentioned:
- 1. A righteous branch – per Lehi

- 3. A spokesman for Moses called Aaron – per Joseph
- 4. A seer (a choice seer) “like unto” Moses – per both Joseph and Lehi

- 7. A descendent of Joseph in Egypt (Joseph Smith, Jun.) who brings forth “expedient” words that “cry from the dust” (the Book of Mormon) – per Joseph
- 8. A spokesman for Joseph Smith (Sidney Rigdon) – per Joseph
- 9. A descendent of Lehi who brings forth Lehite scripture – per Lehi

Here is a list of possible scriptural records spoken of in these scriptures:

Same or different people/records?
Some of these individuals may be the same person, just as some of these records may be the same. But, there is also the possibility that they are all different people and all different records. It is possible to narrow things down a bit. For example, let’s take a look at only the list of 6 people who were mentioned by Joseph in Egypt:
- 1. The prophet Moses that delivers people from Egypt – per Joseph
- 2. A spokesman for Moses called Aaron – per Joseph
- 3. A seer (a choice seer) “like unto” Moses – per both Joseph and Lehi
- 4. A seer “like unto” Joseph in Egypt, called Joseph – per Joseph
- 5. A descendent of Joseph in Egypt (Joseph Smith, Jun.) who brings forth “expedient” words that “cry from the dust” (the Book of Mormon) – per Joseph
- 6. A spokesman for Joseph Smith (Sidney Rigdon) – per Joseph
Moses and Aaron (#1 and #2) can be set aside. We know who they were and the records they brought forth. Joseph and Sidney (#5 and #6) we can also set aside. That leaves a seer “like unto” Moses (#3) and a seer “like unto” Joseph (#4). Are these two seers the same person? Are they all the same as Joseph Smith, Jun.? That is the current interpretation of most LDS. It may be the correct one. However, verse 12, which speaks of the Brass Plates* and the Bible, presents a problem because the Brass Plates are listed as either making up “my word which shall have already gone forth among them” or as being “my word” which the seer “like unto” Joseph would bring forth. During the time of Joseph Smith, Jun. the Brass Plates weren’t around, nor did Joseph translate them. Therefore, Joseph doesn’t fit as this seer “like unto” Joseph in Egypt.
That said, it may be that Joseph Smith may yet fulfill the prophecy of this seer if he comes back and translates the Brass Plates or if he comes back after the Brass Plates have been revealed.
The seer “like unto” Moses may also be Joseph Smith, but we don’t have much detail to go on, other than he will be “great like unto Moses” and will do “a work” to bring his brethren to a knowledge of the covenants that the Lord made with their fathers. That can apply to Joseph Smith, or it may apply to some other seer. The fact, though, that this seer will be “like unto” Moses and that Moses was a “deliverer” of the Lord’s people, may mean that the seer “like unto Moses” will also be a deliverer of the Lord’s people. Did Joseph “deliver” the Lord’s people from a Pharaoh-type of individual? No.
Again, the seer “like unto” Joseph is going to be like Joseph because “the thing which the Lords shall bring forth by his hand shall bring my people unto salvation.” So, just as Joseph saved his family from starvation, so likewise the seer “like unto” Joseph will save the Lord’s people. From starvation? We don’t know. We LDS often assume that everything is spiritual in the scriptures, but really, as Nephi said, things manifested to prophets by the voice of the Spirit are often “things pertaining to things both temporal and spiritual”.
So, nothing concrete can be determined about the seer “like unto” Moses and the seer “like unto” Joseph. We are free to interpret these seers as Joseph Smith (whether his future or past missions), but we are likewise free to interpret them as separate and distinct seers, one that will deliver the Lord’s people (temporally and spiritually) and one that will save the Lord’s people (temporally and spiritually).
However, what we do know is that the seer “like unto” Joseph will be named Joseph, like his father. And the seer “like unto” Lehi will be named Lehi, like his father. So, if there is a pattern here, we might surmise that the seer “like unto” Moses will be named Moses, like his father. If this is a true pattern, then it will be a little easier to determine who these seers are when they show up, merely by finding out their names and their father’s names.

Here is the list of personages mentioned by Lehi in the Book of Mormon:

I’ve already covered a seer “like unto” Moses. The “righteous branch” we don’t know much about. It may be Joseph Smith, or it may be some other seer. We do know that this “righteous branch” is not the Messiah because Lehi explicitly says so.
A seer “like unto” Lehi, who is called Lehi after the name of his father, has not shown up, yet. This man may be a descendant of Lehi or merely a descendent of Joseph in Egypt. But we do know that Joseph Smith doesn’t fit because he had the wrong name. Also, as this seer will be “like unto” Lehi, it may mean that he will save the Lord’s people in the same manner as Lehi did. How did Lehi save the Lord’s people? By leading them away from the apostate majority.
A descendent of Lehi (plus spokesman) still hasn’t shown up. Also, the new Lehite record that this man will translate hasn’t come forth, as yet. Joseph Smith doesn’t fit this bill as he’s got the wrong lineage.
Lastly, the Josephite restorer still hasn’t shown up. Again, Joseph Smith’s lineage is wrong. This man will be a descendant of Joseph, son of Lehi. He will not be a Lamanite, Lemuelite, Ishmaelite, Jacobite, Zoramite, Mulekite or Nephite. This narrows it down a bit. Once we know the man’s lineage, it will be much easier to determine whether he is the man spoken of here by Lehi.
Prophecy is a pattern
In Lehi’s blessing to his son Joseph, he paraphrased Joseph in Egypt, using Joseph’s prophecies as a base or reference point, upon which to pronounce his own prophecies which were tailored to his son Joseph (son of Lehi). Unless his words explicitly state that he is paraphrasing Joseph in Egypt, it may be rightly interpreted as being Lehi’s own prophecy, which he was pronouncing on the spot, being filled with the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Keep this in mind.
Lehi wasn’t just a simple prophet. He was a seer. We don’t know if he possessed a Urim and Thummim, but we do know that he was a “visionary man”, seeing things in visions and dreams. This is the mark of a seer, not a prophet. But Lehi also prophesied of things. So, he was a seer and a prophet. And he received revelations, new commandments that pertained to the Nephites, altering the law which was given to Moses in significant ways. He was a prophet, seer and revelator and a dispensation head, being the head of the so-called Nephite dispensation. In fact, he was very much “like unto” Moses. Lehi, then, was uniquely qualified to speak of seers, being one himself, and also of prophecies, having spoken and written many of his own, and of revelations, having revealed the word of the Lord to his people.
The tendency to treat 2 Ne. 3 as if Lehi was merely quoting Joseph in Egypt is tempting, as this is what non-prophets and non-seers typically do. We non-prophets quote others whose words we consider greater than ours. (For example, consider our favorite past-time of quoting general authorities.) Instead of adding something new, our own prophecy, we rehash what others have already said. But Lehi and Joseph were equals, seeing eye to eye. They both were seers. 2 Ne. 3, then, should be viewed as Lehi’s prophecy, not as Joseph in Egypt’s prophecy. The paraphrasing he does of Joseph in Egypt’s words is to launch his own prophecy, tailored specifically to his son’s lineage. In other words, he took the words of Joseph as a pattern and applied it in his own prophecy. So, when reviewing the differences between the two versions, each version should be taken as a separate and distinct prophecy.
Okay, let’s get into the text.
Lehi’s opening words to his son Joseph
In chapter 3 of 2 Nephi, Lehi gives a father’s blessing to his youngest son Joseph, prophesying concerning Joseph’s seed (the Josephites) in the latter days. Lehi begins by wishing that the land (the American continent) be consecrated to Joseph and his seed (the Josephites) for their inheritance along with Joseph’s brothers, for Joseph’s “security forever,” if they would just keep the commandments of God. Next, he wishes that God would bless Joseph forever and then prophesies, “thy seed shall not utterly be destroyed.” (See verses 2 and 3.)
He then attempts to explain or expound upon his prophecy to Joseph, detailing exactly how it is that his “seed shall not utterly be destroyed.” To do this, Lehi turns to the plates of brass, to a prophecy uttered by Joseph in Egypt. Lehi cites and/or paraphrases the ancient Joseph’s words, reviewing “the covenants of the Lord which he made unto Joseph.” These words do not appear in the Bible (the stick of Judah) but they were found written on the plates of brass (the stick of Ephraim). Luckily, however, the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible contains a version of this prophecy.
A righteous branch; a prophet; neither of which is the Messiah
It may be helpful to compare the two versions. I will put in bold type everything that is exactly the same.
And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die, and go unto my fathers; and I go down to my grave with joy. The God of my father Jacob be with you, to deliver you out of affliction in the days of your bondage; for the Lord hath visited me, and I have obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of my loins, the Lord God will raise up a righteous branch out of my loins; and unto thee, whom my father Jacob hath named Israel, a prophet; (not the Messiah who is called Shilo;) and this prophet shall deliver my people out of Egypt in the days of thy bondage. And it shall come to pass that they shall be scattered again; and a branch shall be broken off, and shall be carried into a far country; nevertheless they shall be remembered in the covenants of the Lord, when the Messiah cometh; for he shall be made manifest unto them in the latter days, in the Spirit of power; and shall bring them out of darkness into light; out of hidden darkness, and out of captivity unto freedom. (JST Gen. 50: 24-25)
Wherefore, Joseph truly saw our day. And he obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of his loins the Lord God would raise up a righteous branch unto the house of Israel; not the Messiah, but a branch which was to be broken off, nevertheless, to be remembered in the covenants of the Lord that the Messiah should be made manifest unto them in the latter days, in the spirit of power, unto the bringing of them out of darkness unto light—yea, out of hidden darkness and out of captivity unto freedom. (2 Ne. 3: 5)
Notice that there is a difference between the two versions. The JST seems to have Joseph in Egypt saying that God will raise up two things: 1) a righteous branch out of Joseph’s loins and 2) a prophet, raised up unto Israel. This prophet was to deliver the people of the Lord out of Egypt in the days of bondage, and was not going to be the Messiah, so presumably this is Moses. Again, the JST is talking of two separate things: a righteous branch and the prophet Moses.
But Lehi mixes the two together. Lehi says that it will be a righteous branch that will be raised up unto Israel (not Moses, like Joseph in Egypt said), and that this righteous branch will not be the Messiah. Lehi completely skips over all talk of Moses.
Okay, thus far we have:
- A righteous branch mentioned by Joseph and Lehi (not the Messiah, according to Lehi)
- A prophet mentioned by Joseph only (not the Messiah, according to Joseph in Egypt)
A seer (a choice seer) “like unto” Moses; Moses identified as the “prophet”
A seer shall the Lord my God raise up, who shall be a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins. (JST Gen. 50: 26)
For Joseph truly testified, saying: A seer shall the Lord my God raise up, who shall be a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins. (2 Ne. 3: 6)
Lehi ceases paraphrasing and here directly quotes from the plates of brass. Now we have to add a third item on this list:
- A righteous branch mentioned by Joseph and Lehi (not the Messiah, according to Lehi)
- A prophet that delivers people from Egypt, mentioned by Joseph only (not the Messiah, according to Joseph in Egypt)
- A seer (a choice seer)
The record continues:
Thus saith the Lord God of my fathers unto me, A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins, and he shall be esteemed highly among the fruit of thy loins; and unto him will I give commandment that he shall do a work for the fruit of thy loins, his brethren. And he shall bring them to the knowledge of the covenants which I have made with thy fathers; and he shall do whatsoever work I shall command him. And I will make him great in mine eyes, for he shall do my work; and he shall be great like unto him whom I have said I would raise up unto you, to deliver my people, O house of Israel, out of the land of Egypt; for a seer will I raise up to deliver my people out of the land of Egypt; and he shall be called Moses. And by this name he shall know that he is of thy house; for he shall be nursed by the king’s daughter, and shall be called her son. (JST Gen. 50: 27-29)
Yea, Joseph truly said: Thus saith the Lord unto me: A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and he shall be esteemed highly among the fruit of thy loins. And unto him will I give commandment that he shall do a work for the fruit of thy loins, his brethren, which shall be of great worth unto them, even to the bringing of them to the knowledge of the covenants which I have made with thy fathers. And I will give unto him a commandment that he shall do none other work, save the work which I shall command him. And I will make him great in mine eyes; for he shall do my work. And he shall be great like unto Moses, whom I have said I would raise up unto you, to deliver my people, O house of Israel. And Moses will I raise up, to deliver thy people out of the land of Egypt. (2 Ne. 3: 7-10)
With these verses we now read that Lehi is mentioning Moses and is identifying him as the delivering prophet. So, our list is now:

And out of weakness shall he be made strong, in that day when my work shall go forth among all my people, which shall restore them, who are of the house of Israel, in the last days. And that seer will I bless, and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise I give unto you; for I will remember you from generation to generation; and his name shall be called Joseph, and it shall be after the name of his father; and he shall be like unto you; for the thing which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand shall bring my people unto salvation. (JST Gen. 50: 30-33)
But a seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins—and not to the bringing forth my word only, saith the Lord, but to the convincing them of my word, which shall have already gone forth among them. Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise; and his name shall be called after me; and it shall be after the name of his father. And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation. (2 Ne. 3: 11-15)
Now we have a new prophecy, of a new seer. (The words, “and again,” found in JST Gen. 50: 30, tips us off that we are now talking of something different. Also, the writings mentioned in these scriptures are the two sticks, the stick of Judah, which is the Bible, and the stick of Joseph, which is the Brass Plates*.) Here is our list:
- A righteous branch (not the Messiah, according to Lehi)
- The prophet Moses that delivers people from Egypt (not the Messiah, according to Joseph in Egypt)
- A seer (a choice seer) that brings his brethren to a knowledge of the Lord’s covenants which he made with the fathers of Joseph in Egypt; and is considered great “like unto” Moses
- A seer “like unto” Joseph in Egypt, that is given power to bring forth word and convince of word; shall be weak but made strong; shall be called Joseph; father’s name shall be called Joseph; etc.
A seer “like unto” Lehi, called Lehi
There is at least a possibility that Lehi, using Joseph in Egypt’s words found upon the plates of brass,inserted his own prophecy at this point. When Lehi said, “And thus prophesied Joseph, saying: Behold,that seer will the Lord bless; and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise, which I have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be fulfilled,” this may have been either a direct quote from the Brass Plates or a paraphrase. But his next statement may have been Lehi’s own prophecy, using many of the same words Joseph in Egypt used: “Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise; and his name shall be called after me; and it shall be after the name of his father. And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation.”
I’ll break the scripture down to better explain what I mean:
And thus prophesied Joseph, saying: [Lehi quoting or paraphrasing Joseph] Behold, that seer will the Lord bless; and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise, which I [Joseph] have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be fulfilled. [Lehi now begins his own prophecy] Behold, I [Lehi] am sure of the fulfilling of this promise; and his name shall be called after me [Lehi]; and it shall be after the name of his father [Lehi]. And he shall be like unto me [Lehi]; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people [Lehi’s people] unto salvation. [Lehi switching back to Joseph’s prophecy] Yea, thus prophesied Joseph: I am sure of this thing, even as I am sure of the promise of Moses; for the Lord hath said unto me, I will preserve thy seed forever. (2 Ne. 3: 14-16)
Assuming that Lehi prophesied of yet another seer to appear in the latter days, here is the list so far:

Moses and Aaron
And the Lord sware unto Joseph that he would preserve his seed forever, saying, I will raise up Moses, and a rod shall be in his hand, and he shall gather together my people, and he shall lead them as a flock, and he shall smite the waters of the Red Sea with his rod. And he shall have judgment, and shall write the word of the Lord. And he shall not speak many words, for I will write unto him my law by the finger of mine own hand. And I will make a spokesman for him, and his name shall be called Aaron. (JST Gen. 50: 34-35)
Yea, thus prophesied Joseph: I am sure of this thing, even as I am sure of the promise of Moses; for the Lord hath said unto me, I will preserve thy seed forever. And the Lord hath said: I will raise up a Moses; and I will give power unto him in a rod; and I will give judgment unto him in writing. Yet I will not loose his tongue, that he shall speak much, for I will not make him mighty in speaking. But I will write unto him my law, by the finger of mine own hand; and I will make a spokesman for him. (2 Ne. 3: 16-17)

And the Lord said unto me also: I will raise up unto the fruit of thy loins; and I will make for him a spokesman. And I, behold, I will give unto him that he shall write the writing of the fruit of thy loins, unto the fruit of thy loins; and the spokesman of thy loins shall declare it. And the words which he shall write shall be the words which are expedient in my wisdom should go forth unto the fruit of thy loins. And it shall be as if the fruit of thy loins had cried unto them from the dust; for I know their faith. And they shall cry from the dust; yea, even repentance unto their brethren, even after many generations have gone by them. And it shall come to pass that their cry shall go, even according to the simpleness of their words. Because of their faith their words shall proceed forth out of my mouth unto their brethren who are the fruit of thy loins; and the weakness of their words will I make strong in their faith, unto the remembering of my covenant which I made unto thy fathers. (2 Ne. 3: 18-21)
Whereas the JST Bible (stick of Judah) just gives a summary: “and it shall be done unto thee in the last days, also, even as I have sworn”, Lehi’s words here, if taken to be a paraphrase or quote of Joseph in Egypt’s words, show that the Brass Plates go into much greater detail. We learn that there will be a repeat of the Moses/Aaron scenario, that a descendant of Joseph in Egypt will have a spokesman and that this descendent will write “expedient” words, which words will “cry from the dust” and that these words are not called “my words” but “their words” (the writings of the fruit of the loins of Joseph). From all this information it becomes easy to identify who this descendant is, who the spokesman is and what the record is. Here is our updated list:

The above scripture can also be interpreted as Lehi’s words, not Joseph’s. So, when Lehi says, “And the Lord said unto me also”, he is not paraphrasing or quoting Joseph in Egypt, but actually giving his own prophecy, yet again. In that case, there will be a descendent of Lehi raised up, as well as a spokesman, and this descendent will write Lehite scriptures which will be taken to the latter-day Lehites. In fact, the scripture might actually have a dual fulfillment, one applying to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon, and one applying to the Lehite descendent and spokesman. In other words, “And the Lord said unto me also” might mean that the Lord said this to Joseph as well as to Lehi. Based on that, here is the potential list:
- A righteous branch
- The prophet Moses that delivers people from Egypt
- A spokesman for Moses called Aaron
- A seer (a choice seer) “like unto” Moses

The Josephite Restorer
As we can see, our list is getting lengthy. At this point, Lehi has sufficiently reviewed the covenants of the Lord made to Joseph in Egypt to explain how it is that the Josephites “shall not utterly be destroyed.”
And now, behold, my son Joseph, after this manner did my father of old prophesy. Wherefore, because of this covenant thou art blessed; for thy seed shall not be destroyed, for they shall hearken unto the words of the book. (2 Ne. 3: 22-23)
The reason given as to why they don’t get destroyed is that the Josephites of the latter-days “shall hearken unto the words of the book.” The book is not named. It could be the Book of Mormon, which cries “repentance unto their brethren” from the dust or it could be another Lehite book of scripture that does the same. Or it could be both records brought together as one book. Regardless of what the scenario is, the Josephites will end up hearkening and will repent of all their sins.
Because of their penitence, the Josephites will get an additional blessing. Lehi now proceeds to give his own prophecy concerning the latter days:
And there shall rise up one mighty among them, who shall do much good, both in word and in deed, being an instrument in the hands of God, with exceeding faith, to work mighty wonders, and do that thing which is great in the sight of God, unto the bringing to pass much restoration unto the house of Israel, and unto the seed of thy brethren. And now, blessed art thou, Joseph. Behold, thou art little; wherefore hearken unto the words of thy brother, Nephi, and it shall be done unto thee even according to the words which I have spoken. Remember the words of thy dying father. Amen. (2 Ne. 3: 24-25)
“And there shall rise up one mighty among them,” says Lehi. Who is “them”? It is the descendents (or seed) of Joseph, the son of Lehi. It is the Josephites. This Josephite restorer will be attended with miracles (working mighty wonders) and will bring to pass “much restoration” to the rest of the Lehites as well as to the whole house of Israel. Here is the final list:
- A righteous branch
- The prophet Moses that delivers people from Egypt
- A spokesman for Moses called Aaron
- A seer (a choice seer) “like unto” Moses
- A seer “like unto” Joseph in Egypt, called Joseph
- A seer “like unto” Lehi, called Lehi

Conclusion
There are potentially eleven people spoken of in this chapter. Only one of them is plainly Joseph Smith. And there are potentially eight books of scripture mentioned. Again, only one of them is plainly the Book of Mormon. In my view, 2 Nephi chapter 3 is not as cut and dry as the chapter heading would have us believe.

When I wrote the text above, I interpreted “that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah” as the Bible. Two years later I wrote the CTC post, which brought out the book of the Lamb of God stuff. Coming back to this post and reading it, I see that “that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah” is likely the book of the Lamb of God, per the CTC post, and not the Bible, as I had previously thought. I probably shouldn’t waste my time here, but I’ve never read a more exhaustively retarded interpretation of scripture. You fit perfectly the description of “ever learning yet never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.” A perfect example, though there were many, was your interpretation that this choice seer would be named Lehi after his father. You clearly have no idea whether Lehi is talking or Joseph of Egypt and for you to assume it was Lehi is utterly rediculous. Your apparent pride has led you down the path of strained interpretation of scripture and apostasy.
You know, Cass Sunstein advocated that a government stealth infiltration should be accomplished by sending agents into “chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups,” where such agents could attempt to either discredit the site or redirect their work.

I was reading the Josephite restorer portion of the prophecy today, which is the following:
and it struck me that this man would engage in two restorations: one “unto the house of Israel” and one “unto the seed of thy brethren.” It seemed to me that the restorations would be scriptural records, one that pertained to the house of Israel and one that pertained to “the seed of [Joseph’s] brethren.” The scriptural record that pertains to the house of Israel, which is yet to be restored to them is the stick of Ephraim, known to us as the plates of brass. And the scriptural record that pertains to the “seed of [Joseph’s] brethren” is the fullness of the ministry of the Savior among Lehi’s seed, not the abridged account we currently have. I wondered if this Josephite restorer would be the instrument in God’s hands to bring these two, specific records forth.
Jesus prophesied that “the fulness of these things shall be made known unto [us Gentiles]” at some point. His exact words were:
The “fulness of these things” He was referring to are the sayings that He gave to the Nephites during His ministry to them, which He commanded them to write. See verse 4, where He says, “these sayings which ye shall write shall be kept.” What we have in the Book of Mormon is not the fulness of that record, but just an abridgement. See 3 Ne. 26:6-11.
Anyway, reading these passages again it almost seemed like the Josephite Restorer might be a convert, through the Book of Mormon and the preaching of the Gentile missionaries, who is then made aware of his lineage, perhaps directly from God through angelic ministrations, etc., since how can anyone know whether they are descended from Joseph, the son of Lehi? And this man then is used by God to bring forth these restorations. In other words, that perhaps this is a man inside of the church of Christ who then starts operating in an unauthorized (by the Brethren) fashion, which is why the Gentile Mormons will largely reject the records he brings forth. However, the man will be doing miracles, so it’s not like there won’t be abundant signs that he is chosen and approved of God.
Last night, as I was praying fervently, my mind was unexpectedly turned towards this Josephite restorer and I had some new insights given to me about his restoration mission. My mind was turned towards Zenos’ words:
“And the wild fruit of the last had overcome that part of the tree which brought forth good fruit, even that the branch had withered away and died.”
and I understood that it was this man’s mission to restore this branch of Israel which had withered away and died, which branch, of course, were the Nephites (and Jacobites and Josephites and Zoramites.) I understood that this would be a literal restoration, so that a nation of new Nephites could and would be born in a day (see Isa. 66:8), possessing all that they needed to live as their ancient fathers did. In other words, this man would obtain from the Lord a complete knowledge of the ancients of this land: their customs and manner of industry, of dress, of speech, of all things that pertained to the ancient Nephites, and of all things that were given to them by the Lord, such as their tribal orders, their warfare orders, etc. Even their very language would be restored by this man and the way they made all their things in peace (such as their temples and other edifices) or wartime (such as their weapons), so that they could begin again to build up the land as their father’s did, according to the pattern that was anciently given to them by the Lord.
The man would have it given to him to know who the remnant was, and where they were, in order to restore them to the knowledge of their fathers. And many other such thoughts were given to me as I prayed one of the strangest prayers I’ve ever given.
I was also given to understand during the prayer, by this same tribal Spirit that came over me, that the Gentiles who had accepted the gospel and entered into the Abrahamic covenant, had not qualified for, nor entered into, the Nephite covenant, and that the Nephite blessings pertained only to those who entered into the Nephite covenant. Specifically, I was made to understand that the repeated Book of Mormon statement:
“Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; and inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.”
was part of the covenant given to Lehi and concerned his posterity, or all those who would label themselves Nephites or Lamanites. The Nephites were Nephites by birth, but also by covenant, and this covenant could be traced to Nephi and also Lehi. Nephi got the blessing part of the covenant (prosperity if the commandments were kept). Laman got the cursing part (being cut off). A Lamanite that repented adopted the ways and customs (and covenants) of a Nephite, thus nullifying the curse and bringing them into the Nephite covenant of blessings. I’m not even sure I’m explaining this as plainly as it should be explained, but I understand what was given to me to understand during this prayer, and it is essentially this:
There is a covenant within a covenant within a covenant within a covenant. We Gentile Mormons recognize the first covenant: the Abrahamic covenant, of which we claim we are a part. But within that covenant, there is a Josephic covenant, which Lehi spoke of here:
“And now, behold, my son Joseph, after this manner did my father of old prophesy. Wherefore, because of this covenant thou art blessed; for thy seed shall not be destroyed, for they shall hearken unto the words of the book.”
Now the Josephic covenant was that the seed of Joseph, who was the great-grandson of Abraham, would forever be preserved, so that there would always be descendants of Nephi, Sam, Jacob, Joseph, Laman and Lemuel found in this land, and that in the latter-days they would be restored to become again a righteous branch.
Within that Josephic covenant is the Lehic (yeah, yeah, I’m making up these words as I go along!) covenant, which pertains to the Nephite-Lamanite divisions. And within that Lehic covenant is the Nephite (or Nephic) covenant, which the Lord made to Nephi, pertaining to all those who would be called “the people of Nephi.”
The Nephic covenant is within the Lehic covenant, which is within the Josephic covenant, which is within the Abrahamic covenant. Thus, it is entirely possible to be within the Abrahamic covenant (as we Mormon Gentiles are) and still remain outside of the blessings offered to those within the Josephic, Lehic and Nephic covenants.
I don’t want to expound on this more, since this is supposed to be just a comment and not a post, but I was made to understand that to obtain the blessings offered to all four men, one needed to be within all four covenants. Or, to be plainer, that if one could become a real Nephite, one would have access to the blessings of the other three covenants also, since they were umbrella covenants that covered all Nephites. But since there are no more Nephites extant in the land, these promises, which were made specifically to Nephites, have no application to the Gentiles. Thus, the Gentiles must prosper in the land according to the doctrine of Korihor:
“And many more such things did he say unto them, telling them that there could be no atonement made for the sins of men, but every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime.”
for they have no promise of the Lord of prosperity based upon obedience to commandments. That promise goes only to covenant Nephites, of which there are no more. And so we get counseled by our leaders to obtain schooling so that Babylon will pay us more for our labors, etc.
And this is why this man, this Josephite restorer will come forth, not only for the remnants of the Nephites, Jacobites, Josephites and Zoramites, who are still mixed among the remnants of the Lamanites and Lemuelites, but also so that the converted Gentiles can enter into all four covenants: the Abrahamic, the Josephic, the Lehic and the Nephic.

Yes I have acknowledged that you are not the only one that believes it. It is commonly believed among lots of people. It would not surprise me if it is more commonly accepted than the interpretation that I presented..
Since they were not expecting to wait four generations at the time for the Marvelous Work to begin, and since Joseph and Oliver had not yet gotten the keys of the gathering, I think the interpretation may have been more logical then than it is now but I certainly see why you and people then and now might interpret it that way.
I actually find the statement by Cowdery more interesting than the one by Pratt. Maybe that is because I had not seen that one.
That is a great find for supporting that interpretation.
I’d say that most LDS believe that Joseph Smith is the one the prophecy refers to, if only because the current edition of the Book of Mormon has a footnote that reads, “TG Joseph Smith.” Although they probably believe he already fulfilled it, not that he will yet fulfill it, as you do.

You are both correct, in time you will understand this.
Joseph the son of lehi received the promise that his seed would not be destroyed because they would hearken unto the “words” of the book. Have you seen any pure Nephite white and delightsome Indians? Probably not, where were the last of the Nephites destroyed?Cumorah! if any of them survived it would have been close to Cumorah. Did they have access to the “words” of the book at that time and place. I suspect they did. Can “seed” also be understood as genes or genetics? Of course. After some 1400 years do you think they mixed their seed with the more numerous Lamanites? More than likely they did, would that still qualify as Josephs seed? I believe it would and who was living just down the road to Cumorah? None other than Joseph Smith Jr.
I think Joseph deserved his reputation of spreading a righteous seed. Now I’m sure the overly pious will be offended but God and Joseph see things in a different light.

I usually delete pingbacks, but the one found above actually adds a little more information to this post, so I’m leaving it.
Okay, I finally can expound 2 Nephi chapter 3. I finally understand it. I thought that I’d come back here and re-read this post and sure enough, after re-reading it with my current understanding, I now know that the first poster got it right in calling it exhaustively retarded.
Nevertheless, there were a few things I got right in the post, (which I got right because the spirit of prophecy was starting to work in me at that time). And, even the errors in the post (and there were many of them) allowed me to get thinking and pondering about these things, so that now, four years later, I finally understand what Lehi and also Joseph were talking about, and who they were talking about, and can correct all the errors. So, although I’m quite embarrasses by what I wrote, meaning by the ignorance that I demonstrated in the post, I’m glad that I wrote it.
I suppose I ought to make a new post and actually expound this scripture, huh? I don’t think expounding it in this comment would be the best thing, so I guess I’ll do that.
However, in this comment I will say that yesterday I took the opportunity to expound the scripture to my first-born son, and I did so according to the spirit of prophecy and revelation which was in me at the time, and new stuff came out, which I didn’t know, and which made us both smile and laugh. My job is not easy. I need a small break. It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. Every time I am given a top secret assignment, I am thrown into the pit on an uncharted scape plan on a need to know basis. I have changed identities too many times that I even forget who I am. I am bored, so I exercise faith first, then shoot, then take a nap, watch a spirit offending movie, eat some sacramentak bread, drink some sacramental wine, as a drunkard of Ephraim, I do my errands half spiritually drunk, and then before I become sober, if needs be I sacrifice or repent, go to hell, do the time, work to pay the fine, check with my master to see if I can have my old job back, and if he has, I wait for the man to die, then ask if there is another in line before me, if not, I am immediately hired back, and remeber the shot I took when I cut off rahab, and Lucifer fell as lightning from heaven.
When I wake up from the druzz and get all fricked out by the waste and.wear, I put my index finger in my mouth, lift it to the check the direction of the wind. And if there is no rain, I take a swift flight to search for my intended target and call the wayward arrow to hit it right in the bulls eye. I come from a line of decent, a branch or two of the house of Israel .At times, very wicked men that have ruled harshly and and wickedly their people. They have taken and usurped secular governments in bloodless and in bloody rebellions and in coupe de etats. If you have heard of the Tinocos and the Zomozas, you have heard of me.
IF I were to look at me, as look more stout than Eden Pastora and Fidel Castro on their worst days put together. I have a PRENTIVE verdict from the highest council of heaven against a the charred part of a candle wick put out. That is, Denver Snuffer. And a severing warning to each and all his purported followers. This verdict, is complete in harmony with the verdict of his excommunication but which differs in nature.
If Denver Snuffer thinks that he is the one mighty and strong, my answer to him is, get thee behind me Satan for I am fisrt in war.
Denver Snuffer made a sacred and solemn covenant with God and before angels and these witnesses. And God will not be.mocked. FIRST, he broke the covenant of the Holy Priesthood that cannot be violated or moved under severe and irrevocable penalties which state:
“For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.
They become the sons of Moses and of Aaron and the seed of Abraham, and the church and kingdom, and the elect of God.
And also all they who receive this priesthood receive me, saith the Lord; For he that receiveth my servants receiveth me;
And he that receiveth me receiveth my Father;
And he that receiveth my Father receiveth my Father’s kingdom; therefore all that my Father hath shall be given unto him.
And this is according to the oath and covenant which belongeth to the priesthood.
Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive this oath and covenant of my Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved.

By rejecting the fullness of the priesthood and the appointed channels and stating that priesthood authority is not needed to regulate the affairs of the church and to conduct its ordinances for the salvation of the living and the dead, he has denied the Holy Ghost and therefore the truth of the faith he once professed in open rebellion and rejection to God and his duly called, appointed and authorized servants. He has therefore become a law unto himself, a lawless man and an anti-christ.
SECOND, whether he understood it, took it seriously or not, he made a solemn covenant, under penalties and obligations, before God, angels and these witnesses, out of his free will and choice, which he took, to obey the law of sacrifice, among others, and thereafter to avoid evil speaking of the Lord’s annointed; and also to consacrate, dedicate, and separate himslelf to build up the kingdom of God and for the establishment of Zion as recorded in the holy scriptures by consecrating himself, his gift and talents and his life if necessary, to sustain the kingdom of God on earth and the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And you all know that he broke them all and also lied to me, to the Holy Ghost and the holy spirit of promise.
THIRD, He was counseled to cease and desist or to.SACRIFICE his worldly pursuits, but he sold his gifts for money by using his gift for evil purposes just like unto Judas Iscariot or any other apostate anti Christ,,by publishing for profit and authority and proper justification, evil speaking material agaisnt the Lord anointed from Joseph Smith to the ptesent time. This is not a mere disagreement on misunderstanding, but blatantly rebelled. In other words he took the place of the first born, or the right of Adan which is the office of Patriarch over the whole heart which by right and leanage belongs to the oldest living spirit under heaven.
He, Denver Snuffer, instead of building faith and unity in the legally established kingdom of God under false pretences, having as cain, the perfect knowledge of greater light, as he so claims, instead of building up the kingdom of God and to establishing Zion, he has dishonored and contamitated or polluted the holy church of God by transfiguring the word of God to his own covetousness; and in so doing, he planted doubt, rebellion and dissent in the souls of many memebers and turned away dissenters of the kingdom of God. This is blatant and perhaps irremisible treason worst than that of Alma, the son of Alma and the.sons of Mosiha and their friends before their conversion.
And It would have been better for Denver Snouffer at this juncture not to have been born, or to tie a rope to his neck and to jump from a bridge than to have offended a little one and lied to the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit of Promise during his anointing to which, in the spirit, I attended thru the hands and tempk of the oficiator.
But the devil in him has been detected, and even I, Michael, was almost deceived by an angel of light who caused me serious grievousness of mind and soul before the Lord. But since my testimony is planted in the rock of eternity, that is the foundation of living apostles and prophets, true and faithful messengers of Jesus Christ, being Christ the chief corner stone, the gates of hell have tried to swallow me, but by the gift, grace and mercy of God the Father, and of his son, and of the Holy Ghost, hell hasn’t not prevailed agaist me.
And by the power of the anointing in me and in him, that is Denver Snouffer, and the authority vested in me, I strip him from the holy priesthood and his endowment; and since he has apparently committed the umpaedonable sin, by lying to me and denying the Holy Ghost, I entrust him naked to the buffettings of Satan, from now until the the Judgement of the great day or the day of redemption.
And since he is of the belief beyond authority, that no one has authority or needs the laying in of hands under proper authority to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, or any institutional authority for that matter, by the same token he is discharged and entrusted into darkness and to the bufftings of Saran, for before he is, the Lord of the whole earth says, I AM.
In other words all his blessings will implode as rain and lighting upon him and cause the exact opposite effect he hoped for and anticipated.
And to all those who.have followed Denver Snuffer, and those that have apostatized like him, and his or their apoatate claims, and have supported his iniquity after being warned and couseled not to do so, for which he was cut off from the church, must needs be to repent speedily and make ammends or face the fury of the ax man as it has been hitherto foretold. For to this end was I born, even to regulate the affairs of the church in humility and also to testify of the.divinity of Jesus Christ whose voice I have.heard and whose word I know. For if we do not live by the law we shall die by the law as recorded in the scriptures and the law of the church which is the kingdom of God upon the earth under which no flesh is exempt before God. For without law there can be no order anytime or anywhere. And you must know also that the house of God is a house of God and not of confusion. And here lies the salvation and condemnation of man.
I have been blessed, called and anointed thru the proper channels to be a leader in the true knowledge of the affairs of the church, even to set the house of God in order if needs be. But the house of God and the church of God are two separate things. The church is the legal and I established institution of which I have no bearing or authority to meddle with. The priesthood leadership is dowing an awesome job with that.
But the house of God is the people and their works and manner of living, their adherence to law and principle and that can only be regulated by God the Father in righteousness by the cepter of power thru the channeles of the literal seed and the patriarchal priesthood or one of the patriarchal seed who by lineage and ordination has the right of Adam, to represent him and occupy the right of the first born or the office of Ix-Miquili-Pantl which translated means, Michael the Archangel. Again the office of Patriarch over the whole earth in whose person God has put all parts of his very own name, even ELUGIM or ELOHIM which is one like unto God or as the name if mplies, MIGUEL OR MICHAEL backwards and in correctly arranged and/or transliterated.
This power usually falls on the oldest living spirit under heaven or the presiding patriarch over the church which is the one and only, one mighty and strong in each generation of time and Eternity, the first of which ever is our heavenly father under whose authority I speak. And the first to occupy this office of Michael the Archangel in heaven to preside over the spirits and the human race was Adam or Michael. Then the next was Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob or Israel, Joseph all the way down and up to Joseph Smith Father, up until Joseph fielding Smith down and up to Eddy L Barillas and Morgan Bates to Me, the abominable of nations, the servant of servants, even, Miguel Angel surnamed Tinoco or Choice seer or the man with the Ax, which ever way you want to see it.

As a spirit, when the children of Isarael, rebelled agaist God and were feaeful to hear his own voice, he no longer could walk with them without destroying them, for even Moses could any longer stand or see the face of God, but only his backward parts. As you see, my sword is the word of God under the direction of the Holy One.who is without beginning of day or end of life, for gnolaun is my name. And even though I speak much thru the word of God, no one has heard my voice in the streets, nor do I reveal anything new outside the proper channels, for I am not the Lord’s mouth piece, andb I do not trespass my bounds. Or in other, words, despite things I say, I don’t use my own mouth or voice.
As a natural patriarch in Israel, and holding by right and linage, the right of first man, or by virtue of being the oldest spirit under heaven, I preside over all the spirits in my generation in this last dispensation. For it is written that the last shall be as the first and the first as the last.

Disorder in the accomplishment of delegated familiar and ecclesiastical duties that bring bondage of sin, much suffering and tribulations that I myself need to taste and endure to register, report and indicate how to fix by pointing out your errors and where and how to find the solutions in the scriptures, pretty much like a serpent healer with the key of salvation.
In some instances, many fall, are removed or replaced and others are planted in their instead.
For no one comes to the Father of except thru the son, and no one comes to the son, except the Father gives the spirit or the verb or word of God.
And even do I hold the three orders of priesthood and am prepared to officiate in their ordinances, without which the power of Godliness is not made manifest, and the power thereof with their respective keys, independently speaking, I only have at present time right or authority to act with the authority of our father in heaven so not to interfere with the established secular or ecclesiastical authority of the church as long as they don’t interfere with mine. Because when they interfere with me, they interfere with the kingdom and order of heaven.
And I am not implying anything, for I did not call myself. It is noted in my patriarchal blessing. I both honor and magnify my calling and election in the priesthood unto the power of deliverance. I have served, wasted and wearied my life in service to all even at a young age. I have helped flood the eqeth with truth.
I have preached the gopsel of Elias, which the gospel of salvation to a great many people among the living and the dead, and before kings, governors and rulers in desguise like Abinadi and Samuel the lamanite, in public and in secret like Alma, Nephi, Jacob, King David, Amulek, Joseph Smith, Thomas S. Monson and the living Christ.
I have not taken payment, financing or glory to myself other than ocassional boasting to stir your thoughts and influence your interest for good so that you investigate my claims and search the truth for yourselves.
I never envisioned to attract any followers other than my current family and my dead ancestors. Nor have I sought a position in the church. In fact, I have burned many bridges to that end so that no one thinks of me that I am more than any other flesh.
I am EITHER cold or hot. Neither am I behind an inch of the chiefest of the apostles in words testimony and deeds, for we all work for the same end, which is to try to assist God in his work and glory of bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. I receive my commandments, and instructions by attending meetings at church and in the temples. And I don’t return and report until I have accomplished the thing or the burden of the Lord, for his words do not return to him empty.
And because I am oft mis understood, I have been called a mad or wild man that prophesies. I have suffered much contempt, scorn and rejection and even incarceration. In defense of my testimony, like Joseph of old, I have been taken with violence and against my will, to the pit by my own brethren where I have been numbered with the infirm and with the transgressors. My personal character, credibility and life has been marred beyond repair.
All have turned their back on me, including my own wife and children, I am a man with little or nothing to lose, and with great personal, temporary and spiritual necessities. But my arms have been made strong, by the hand of the almighty, who watches over me unto deliverance. I have fought like a dragon for my God entities human and animal alike from the unseen world too weird to do describe like a child in the wilderness.
You all can refer to my patriarchal blessing where it is written that I will be a blessings to a great many people and be a leader to my children and to all my ancestors. Like Abraham, I am to be taken by the hand by the Lord in the paths of righteousness and where I cannot cross, he will carry me, for I am to be given Righteousness. He has instructed and cared for me from the beginning, because Satan knows who I am, that I will prove to be a not small disrurber of his kingdom. He has tried his utmost to destroy me from the beginning without any reservations or pretensions.
Despite my weaknesses and disabilities, for I have suffered much when corrected by my own iniquity, I am am given charge to study the scriptures every day in order to teach all my children the gospel of Jesus Christ to the best of my abilities or face the wrath of God which is not an easy thing for me to endure either. And last but not least, I am on the Lord’s errand with power to write but not to speak which I must exercise as it was with Oliver Cowdery to bring hidden things unto light.
I am a dreamer like my father Joseph also. The other night, I dreamed a dream that Apostle Christopherson came to my lodging place, and he gave me a little book which appeared as a small set of silver plates. I saw the engravings, which characters and instructions I readily recognized as reforemed Egyptian. The instructions in between the sections of characters were in English or Spanish, which I could not read or decipher because I am not learned. But I took the book. And I had company with me that told that I had made a direct hit. I know I was in the spirit world among the dead that were coming in and out of my lodging place. Some of which I dispatched away because they were crowding the place and I had personal businesses to attend to. I then lost track of the book and woke up wondering what it all meant. Until it is given me the interpretation thereof, I wait.
These things I humbly record declare and record in earth and in heaven as one having authority under the proper channels, and I do it humbly and solemnly, in the presence of God, angels and these witnesses in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.
